DESCENDANTS OF LT. WILLIAM
GRAVES AND ELIZABETH WILLIAMS OF MA, AND NOVA SCOTIA & NEW BRUNSWICK,
CANADA
INTRODUCTION
It seems likely that there is a
connection between the family of Lt. William Graves and the family of Joseph
Graves of New Brunswick, Canada (genealogy 282). According to Planters and Pioneers by Esther Clark Wright,
Joseph Graves and family moved from CT to St. John, New Brunswick about 1760,
and his children were the following, all born in CT: George, d. New Brunswick;
Elias, b. 1776, d. Aylesford, Kings Co., Nova Scotia; John, d. 1862, Port
Lorne, Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia, m. Elizabeth Banks, c. 1775, Annapolis Co.,
Nova Scotia; Rachel; Elizabeth.
Mrs. Betty Andrews Storey (R‑3)
believes this line may have come from William Graves who moved to Annapolis
Twp., Nova Scotia in 1760 (the Lt. William Graves of this genealogy).
There is a possible connection with
the family of Joseph Graves, born about 1699, who married Rachel Pratt
(genealogy 133). They lived in
Framingham, MA (not CT), and their sons included Joseph, b. 1723, William, b.
1729, Benjamin, b. 1729, Phineas, b. 1735, Timothy, b. 1739, John, b. 1742, and
Ebenezer, b. 1746. It is
interesting to note that Phineas first married Miss Pepper; she died after the
birth of their second child in 1761, and he then moved to Annapolis Co., Nova
Scotia and married an Elizabeth Banks (same name as the woman who married John
Graves, son of Joseph).
The town of Weston, MA, where Lt.
William Graves was from, adjoins Natick, which adjoins Framingham. The family of Joseph Graves who married
Rachel Pratt lived in both the latter places.
GENERATION 1
We first hear of Lt. William Graves
(1) in the Township of Granville, Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia, Canada. In a Confirmation of Land Grants, 1764,
William Graves was given lot number 11 in Granville Township. This land grant was awarded to William
as a result of his military service in the French and Indian Wars which ended
in 1763.
It is believed that the parents of
William may have been Thomas Graves and Ann Stone.
Massachusetts Officers in the French and
Indian Wars, edited by Nancy S. Voye,
shows William Graves having two tours of duty. His rank is Lt.; residence in Massachusetts is Weston. From Nov. 2, 1759 until July 1, 1760
(43 weeks, 5 days) he was in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, in Capt. Daniel Fletcher's
Company, under Colonel Frye. He
signed on for another tour of duty, remaining in Nova Scotia, stationed in
Annapolis Royal in Capt. Jabez Snow's Company from July 2, 1760 until Dec. 16,
1760 (33 weeks).
It is not known whether William
returned to Massachusetts at the end of his duty. He married Elizabeth Williams in 1760 in Granville. No exact date of marriage has been
found. Their first child, William,
Jr., was born Sept. 1761 in Nova Scotia.
This would seem to indicate that William never returned to the Colonies
(at least not for any length of time) after being stationed in Annapolis during
the Wars.
A Nova Scotia 1770 census for
Granville, Annapolis Valley, lists "Lt. William Graves and family of 1
woman, 2 boys, and 1 girl: 5 Protestants from America". Nova Scotia land records state that
William applied for land "on the river of Annapolis Royal" sometime
before 1777. In 1783 William and
his eldest son, William, Jr., crossed the Bay of Fundy (the body of water
separating Nova Scotia from New Brunswick) and joined the Loyalist settlers in
New Brunswick. They arrived in
Saint John, New Brunswick, and received a grant of 2,000 acres bordering on
Kennebecasis Bay on the outskirts of the loyalist city of Saint John.
The Story of Sussex (New Brunswick) and
Vicinity by Grace Aiton states "the
two Williams (father and son) made their way up the Kennebecasis in Indian
canoes and camped on the site now occupied by the Penobsquis United Baptist
Church before settling at Springdale.
From there they spread up the Portage Valley and were the first to make
use of the upper reaches of the river for the operating of mills. William, the son, was the noted strong
man of his day, and he thought nothing to harness himself to a sled loaded with
farm produce and haul it over the frozen river's surface to Saint John."
Since William's wife, Elizabeth,
did not accompany him and their son to New Brunswick, it is assumed she was
deceased. Family stories say she
died in Nova Scotia and was buried there in Annapolis Valley. No death record or marked grave exists
to verify this.
A book written on the history of
Granville in Annapolis Valley states that William and Elizabeth's other son and
daughter remained in Nova Scotia.
They both married, had children, and a few of their descendants remained
in Nova Scotia at the time this book was written (in 1888). An Elias Graves, born 1766, was granted
land in Aylesford Township in 1810.
There he married Miriam Parker in 1792 and raised their children. Since it is recorded he moved to
Aylesford from Annapolis, it would seem very likely this Elias was the other
son of William and Elizabeth listed in the 1770 census. There is also a record of Sarah Graves,
born about 1768, who married Joshua Fowler on 26 Feb. 1792. She may have been the daughter of
William and Elizabeth. There are
no birth or baptism records to verify these assumptions.
It is not recorded when or where
Lt. William Graves, Sr., died, but it is assumed to be in New Brunswick,
probably in Kings County where he had settled with his son, William Jr.
Elias and Sarah are probable
children of William, but not proven.
Elias is also given as a son of Joseph Graves of New Brunswick (gen.
282). (R‑1, R‑4)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1)
AND ELIZABETH WILLIAMS
William Graves, Jr. (2) was born in
Sept. 1761 in Granville, Annapolis Co., Nova Scotia, died 15 Dec. 1836 (age 75
years, 3 months) at Penobsquis (or Spring Dale), Kings Co., New Brunswick,
Canada, and was buried in the Anderson Cem., on what later became the McQuinn
farm, Penobsquis, NB. His
headstone reads: "In memory of William Graves who departed this life the
15 December 1836, age 75 years and 3 months. God my redeemer lives and ever from the skies looks down and
watches all my dust till He shall bid it rise."
After settling with his father in
Portage Valley, New Brunswick, he married Emma Armstrong, daughter of Simmon
(or Simon?) Armstrong, about 1785.
She was of French descent, from Dorchester, NB, was born 1765, died 26
March 1865 at Hampton, Kings Co., NB (at 100 years of age), and was buried in
the Cardwell United Baptist Cem. at Penobsquis. This cemetery apparently was not established until after the
death of her husband. Emma's
headstone reads: "Emma Graves, born 1765, died March 26, 1865, age 100
years, wife of William."
Names of the family members are
from The Story
of Sussex and Vicinity by Grace Aiton. All birth dates are from census records. Names of the children are from the 1851
and 1861 censuses (R‑1, R‑2)

GENERATION 3

Charles Graves (5) was born about
1786 in St. John, New Brunswick, and died in Feb. 1876 in Goshen, Albert Co.,

about 1786‑87. They lived at
Elgin, NB. The first 4 children
were listed by both R‑1 and R‑2, the next 2 only by R‑2, and
the others only by R‑1. One
mystery is the large gap in birth dates after Mansfield; were there other
children, or did Charles have a second marriage? Charles and Ann were recorded on the 1851 census in Elgin,
Albert Co., NB. Mrs. Allen (R‑6)
also lists a daughter Emma. (R‑1,

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (7)
Elias Graves (36) was born 5 July
1810 in New Brunswick, Canada, and died 25 Feb. 1873. He married Sophia (probably Draper) on 1 Oct. 1829. She was born 27 April 1812 in New
Brunswick.
The children listed below and their
birthdates were all included in the Graves family Bible (in possession of Mrs.
Mitton's father‑in‑law in 1979). All the family members were included in the 1851 census for
Dist. 20, Orford Twp., Kent Co., Ontario, pp. 39‑40, except for Eliza
Jane, who may have married by that time, and Elias Jr., who wasn't born until
1853. The census showed that
Elias, Sophia, and Gilford were born in New Brunswick, and all the others
(including Gilford's wife, Lydia) were born in Canada. The religion of all the family members was
listed as New Canadian Methodist (N.C.M.).
A land record shows: Elias Graves
purchased from the Crown 23 May 1851, 100 acres, Book A, Folio 84, Registration
63. Lot 16, South Middle Road
Survey, Orford Township, Kent County, North half of lot. A sale of land in 1854 adds nothing,
but gives his wife as Sophia.
One family story is that a
progenitor served under Horatio Nelson, and they were Loyalists who came from
New Brunswick or Nova Scotia, Canada, to Kent Co., Ontario. To be a Loyalist, one had to have lived
in what became the U.S. before the Revolution, be sympathetic to the British
cause, and move to Canada as a result.
