DESCENDANTS
OF JAMES B. GRAVES AND MAHALA HAYES OF VT, OH & IL
GENERATION
1
James B. Graves (1)
was born 1790-1800, probably 1795 or slightly earlier, in VT, and died in 1843
in Piatt Co., IL. He married
Mahala Hayes. She was born about
1795 in VT[1]. The 1850 census for Dist. 22, Christian
Co., IL, listed Mahala, 55, with children Allen and Mahala, with son Seth and
his wife living nearby. The 1840
census for DeWitt Co., IL (close to Christian Co.), listed James B. Graves,
with 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, and 1 male 40-50,
1 female under 5, 1 female 5-10, 1 female 15-20, and 1 female 40-50. The 1830 census for Sheffield, Lorain
Co., OH (on Lake Erie), lists James B. Graves who is probably the same
one. His household consists of 1 m
under 5, 2 m 5-10, 1 m 10-15, 1 m 30-40, 1 f 5-10, 1 f 10-15, 1 f 15-20, 1 f
30-40. There is a James Graves in
the 1820 census for Coshocton Co., OH, but it is much less likely that this is
the right one. In the list of
children, there may have been a couple more older ones, if we assume that the
older children in the 1830 census were children of James rather than younger
siblings. Names of earlier
children may include Russell, b. 1820-1825, and Susan, b. 1820-1825, but
sources for this are not known. At
least the last 5 children were born in OH, and probably all of them were born
there. (R‑4)

daughter of Joel Wadkins, on 7 Oct. 1847 in Christian Co., IL. She was born 9 Aug. 1825 in TN, and
died 20 Nov. 1911 in Marshfield, Webster Co., MO. She was listed as Jane M. Graves in 1880. They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses

Thaddeus W. Graves (4) was born 19
Jan. 1834 (or possibly 1837[2])
in Kenton, Hardin Co., OH, and died before 1920. According to the 1880 census for Whiteside Co., IL, he was
age 43, living in Fulton, IL, born in OH to parents born in VT. He married Amanda E. Geisinger on 14
June 1871 in Whiteside Co., IL, license no. 2866. She was born about 1849 in MD to parents also born in MD. They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses
for Savanna, Carroll Co., IL.
Amanda was widowed and living with her son-in-law and his family in the
1920 census for Denver, CO.
Thaddeus was a day laborer and was doing odd jobs in 1910.
One possibility for the ancestry of
Thaddeus Graves is the descendants of Rear Adm. Thomas Graves of Charlestown,
MA. There were several descendants
named Thaddeus Graves who lived in VT, but none who have been connected with
this Thaddeus. (R‑8)

Co., MO. He married Rachel ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1836 in MO, and

were in the 1880 census for Ozark Twp., Webster Co., MO. Allen was was head of household in the
1900 census for Hazelwood Twp., Webster Co., MO, with widowed daughter Effie
and her children living with him.
Although Allen was listed in 1900 as married, not widowed, his wife was
not in the household and had probably died. He was a farmer.
