DESCENDANTS OF GILLIAM GRAVES OF RANDOLPH CO., NC

GENERATION 1

Gilliam Graves (1) was born about 1813 in NC (or about 1819 in Toms Creek, Randolph Co., NC[1]), supposedly died in Jan. 1876 in Garland Co., AR[2], and was buried next to his wife Polly in Mountain Valley Cem. (formerly known as Mt. Pleasant Cem.), Garland Co., AR. He was supposedly killed by robbers.

Based on Y-DNA test results, Gilliam Graves was a descendant of John Graves of Concord, MA (Gen. 166) and is one of the Related Families of Greaves Family of Beeley (Gen. 228), including Genealogies 28, 220, 247, and others.

Gilliam married first Mary Tyler on 18 Aug. 1832[3] in Randolph Co. They were in Cherokee Co., GA in 1840. On the 1850 Cherokee Co., GA census, there is a Charles Tyler, age 79, born NC, living with Nancy, 30, Rebecca, 25, John, 22, and a William D. Graves, 10, born GA. Is it possible that Mary (Tyler) Graves died, and by 1850 Gilliam had moved on and left son William D. Graves living with grandfather Charles Tyler? The descendants of William D. Graves are included in this genealogy. Gilliam Graves was listed on 5 Nov. 1838 as 1 of 24 names on a jury, and in Dec. 1835 as 1 of 12 jurors, both in Cherokee Co., GA.

He married second Delila (or Delilah) Hawthorne on 18 Aug. 1845 in Montgomery Co., AR according to R‑11. She died about 1860 in Cedar Glades[4], AR and was also buried in Mountain Valley Cem. In 1860, ‘Galem’ Graves was recorded on the census in Montgomery Co., AR with children Sarah, 15, born GA, Aaron, 13, born AL, John, 11, born AL, Julia, 9, born AR, and Nancy, 5, born AR. No record of his family has been located for the 1850 and 1870 censuses. He married third Mary (“Polly”) (Gray) Washburn, daughter of William Andrew Gray and Sarah L. Garrett. Sarah married second ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Kirkland; she married third Nicholas Fisher, and married fourth Jack Zacharia Phillips. Sarah is probably the mother of Sarah Emma Fisher who married Gilliam’s son Jesse. Polly was born about 1840 in Hot Spring Co., AR, and died about 1879 in Cedar Glades, AR. She first married Franklin W. Washburn on 1 Feb. 1859 in Hot Spring Co., AR. He was listed as age 21 and she as age 19.

Gilliam was on the 1853 tax list of Montgomery Co., AR: 1-40-270-60-15-115. In Jan. 1854, he was appointed guardian for the children of Samuel and Sarah Graves of Montgomery Co., AR. This was probably the Samuel Graves (Gen. 829) and Sarah Cole who were married on 30 March 1837 in Randolph Co., NC by Moore Graves. Gillum and Moor[5] Graves were on the 1840 U.S. census for Cherokee Co., GA, Gillum with 1 male 20-30, 3 males under 5, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 5-10. It is believed that Moore Graves died in the 1840’s.

This may be the Sarah (widow of Samuel) and Gillum that are found (separately) on the tax lists in 1853 and later in Montgomery Co., AR.

Sarah owned 39 acres of property that she purchased from the government as follows: 1-NW-SE-11-15-21W-40 150-4-1-100-2-20-270-270-672-67 (Certificate No. 6420). The children of Sarah and Samuel were listed in their own household on the 1860 Montgomery Co., AR census as follows:

Sarah first appeared in Montgomery Co., AR records in 1851 with record NWSE 11 40 acres.

Gilliam appeared on the tax records in Montgomery Co., AR in 1853, 1854, 1855, 1856, 1857, 1858, 1859, 1861, 1865, 1867, 1868, 1871, and 1872. There is another record in April 1861 with Gilliam listed as guardian for the minor heirs of Samuel and Sarah Graves -- Alley, Ultha, Alison, and Madison. William Riley Graves died intestate on 1 Nov. 1861.

On 14 Jan. 1864, Gilliam volunteered at Cedar Glades, Montgomery Co., AR in the Civil War in the Union Army, Co. D, 4th Reg. Sr. On his military papers he listed Randolph Co., NC as his birthplace, 45 years as his age, farmer as his occupation. He had black eyes, dark hair and complexion, and was 5 ft. 10 in. tall. On 12 Oct. 1864, he deserted. On 25 Dec. 1864, he returned from desertion.

This Gilliam Graves probably descended from John Graves (b.c. 1750) and Margery Harvey of Randolph Co. (genealogy 77), and may have been descended from his son Leonard Graves. There are at least 2 descendants of John Graves named Gilliam, a son and a grandson. According to R‑2 and R‑4, Gilliam's father was American Indian.

[Mary] Elizabeth Graves is added as a child based on information on the 1880 Garland Co., AR census; the children listed under Mary Gray were all living with Andrew Washburn, son of Franklin Washburn and Mary (“Polly”) Gray and his wife Amanda, and were referred to as brothers and sisters. They would have been Andrew’s half-siblings.

The following story was submitted by R‑4:

Family Folklore:

“Graves family folklore has it that Gilliam was 1/2 Indian. The story goes that during the Revolutionary War, "Becky" Rebecca Graves, then 10 years old and living with her Grandmother and Mother in N.C./VA was having a birthday gathering. Her only wish was for her father to come home. Both her father and her grandfather had left to fight in the war. The Grandfather, sur-name "Gilliam" had been killed early on. Becky's mother was with child and had stated often that if her child was a boy, she would name him Gilliam after her father.“

Becky's father had promised her that he would be home by her birthday, therefore, Becky was certain he would make it. The small family of Mother, Grandmother and Daughter sat at the table, but Becky wouldn't let them eat until her father arrived. Darkness fell, and the three continued to wait. All at once the door swung open and in came Becky's father. Everyone had a great moment of happiness, but shortly the door swung open again and three British Soldiers burst in and began firing. First to go down was Becky's Grandmother who quickly pulled her Grand daughter down with her and under the table. She told Becky to hide behind the flour barrel, and Becky quickly did as told. The firing stopped but Becky, too terrified to leave the Flour Barrel, stayed hidden for some time. When she finally came out of hiding she saw her mother lying on the floor with her Father over her. His hand moved and Becky ran to him. He told her that her mother and grandmother had died and that he was dying also and that the Soldiers might return so she should run to the Indian Camp not far from her house. She did as told, the Indians took her into their camp and treated her as there own.“

The tribal chief especially loved her as did the chieftainess. They became her adoptive parents in every way. She never went outside of the camp, she learned their language and they learned hers. The tribal chief had a son, his job was to watch out for Becky, so anywhere she went, the cheif's son followed. The tribal chief gave him Becky in marriage and they lived quite happily for many years. The time came, though, that the white man wanted the Indian's land and the white man became very indifferent to their Indian Neighbors. Becky who had difficulty having children finally had a little boy whom she named "Gilliam" after her Grandfather, just as her mother had wanted to name the child she carried in the womb when she was killed by the British. Afraid they were going to lose their home and land, Becky and her family moved outside the Indian Camp back on her father's land and since the Indians did not have sur-names they took Becky's sur-name "Graves". Now, just as Becky never left the Indian Camp for fear of giving herself away, her husband, the son of the tribal chief, never left their homestead.“

Becky had very fair skin and blonde hair. Young Gilliam was rather dark, with dark hair, but passed easily as "White". After the death of her husband, Becky rejoined her white family, who still loved her very much, especially her uncles. Here, her little boy Gilliam grew up as a white child. He stayed in Tom's Creek, Randolph County, North Carolina where he also married a Cherokee and had a son who they also named "Gilliam". This child, born in about 1813 being 1/2 Cherokee from his father and full blooded from his mother was in reality 3/4 Indian. Gilliam fell in love and married Mary Tyler "White" in about 1832. Mary died in childbirth, the child, named William was raised by the "Tyler" grandparents in North Carolina. In 1840, just after the Great “Trail of Tears", Gilliam, and his brother Samuel moved their families west, through Alabama, finally stopping in Montgomery County, Arkansas. Gilliam went on to join the Union Army, Co. D, 4th Reg. Sr. He was described as have dark complexion, with dark hair and black eyes. He was 5'10" tall. He deserted in October of 1864, only to return from desertion in December of 1864. Gilliam had several wives and many children.“

This is folklore, I can not know how much is reality. Just an interesting story I found about Gilliam Graves.

In the 1900 census when he lived with half-sister Adaline in Skagit Co., WA, he indicated his parents were born in NC.

Elizabeth (“Betsey”) Graves (2) was born in June 1833 in AL according to the 1900 census, and died before 1910. She married George Washington Blocker, son of George Blocker and Sara (“Sallie”) Tabitha Watkins, on 21 Jan. 1857 in Montgomery Co., AR. George W.’s father was from IL and died in Cape Girardo, MO; his mother Sallie was born about 1782, died in 1867 in Cedar Glades, Garland Co., AR, and was buried in Mountain Valley Cem. George W. Blocker was born 9 Nov. 1834 in AR, was killed by bushwackers in Dec. 1863, and was buried with his half-brother Billy Gray in a double casket in Mountain Valley Cem. Elizabeth was in the 1900 census for Garland Co., AR, widowed, with only one of her 4 children still living, living with her daughter-in-law, Julia. (R‑5)

William D. Graves (7) was born 20 Nov. 1840 in GA, and died 16 March 1917 in Shelby Co., AL. He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He married second Martha Jane Waggoner, daughter of James Waggoner and Mary (“Polly”) ‑‑‑‑‑, about 1874. She was born 16 April 1848 in AL, and died 29 Aug. 1912 in Shelby Co., AL. Martha was recorded on the 1880 census in Jefferson Co., AL; she and her first three children lived with her parents. William was not listed with the family, and the widow column appears to be checked. However, they were recorded together on the 1900 and 1910 censuses in Shelby Co., AL. In 1900, Martha stated that ten of her twelve children were living; in 1910, she indicated that nine of her eleven children were living. In 1910, W. D. indicated that he had been married twice. All their children were born in AL. (R‑11)

Sarah Jane Graves (8), known as Jane, was born in Oct. 1845 in GA according to the 1860 Montgomery Co., AR census, died 26 June 1910 in Cedar Glades, Garland Co., AR, and was buried in Mountain Valley Cem., Garland Co., AR. She married Joab Houston Fisher, son of Nicholas Fisher and Sarah (Garrett) Gray Kirkland, 22 April 1866 in Montgomery Co., AR. He was born in Oct. 1849, died 22 June 1930 in Cedar Glades, AR, and was also buried in Mountain Valley Cem. This family was recorded on the 1880 and 1900 censuses in Garland Co., AR. In 1900, ‘S.J.’ reported that eight of her ten children were living. In 1930, ‘J.H.’ lived with his daughters Ada and Louanda in Garland Co., AR. (R‑5, R‑10)

Aaron Graves (9) was born 5 Sept. 1846 (or Feb. 1848 according to the 1900 census) in AL, died 28 Sept. 1919 in Garland Co., AR, and was buried in Mountain Valley Cem., Garland Co., AR. As recorded on his Certificate of Death (#233), he was born in 1846 and died at the age of 73, his occupation listed as farmer. He first married Louisa Phillips, daugher of Zachariah Phillips and Mary Elizabeth (“Polly”) Pyland, in 1865. She was born about 1847 in TN, and died about 1881-1884. Their children were born in AR. He married second Mary (“Jane”) Herron, daughter of William Herron and Rhoda Fisher, on 8 Feb. 1885. Jane was born about 1846 in AL, died 22 Jan. 1930, and was also buried in Mountain Valley Cem. Aaron and wife Louisa were listed in the 1880 census for Mountain Twp., Garland Co., AR, and he and wife Jane were listed in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Garland Co., AR. Jane was recorded on the 1920 census in Garland Co., AR as a 68-year old widow; her grandson Ernest D. Graves lived with her. William Herron married Rhoda Fisher on 25 Jan. 1831 in Perry Co., AL. John Richard Graves (10) was born 22 June 1850 in AL (or Cedar Glades, Garland Co., AR per R‑5), died 24 Sept. 1936, and was buried in Shiloh Cem., Garland Co., AR. He married Sarah Angeline Bledsoe, daughter of William Lewis Bledsoe and Charlotte Dodd, on 13 June 1869 in Montgomery Co., AR. She was 15 at the time of her marriage. She was born 15 July 1854 in AR, died 31 July 1922, and was also buried in Shiloh Cem. Sarah’s father was born 28 Dec. 1834 in Kentucky, and died 24 Feb. 1906. Her mother was born about 1837 in Tennessee. William and Charlotte were married 28 July 1853 in Saline Co., AR. John and Sarah were listed on the 1880 census in Montgomery Co., AR and the 1900 census in Mountain Valley Twp., Garland Co., AR. In 1900, they had been married 30 years, had 10 children, with 5 living; those 5 were born in Arkansas. John was recorded as an 87-year old widower on the 1930 census in Garland Co., AR living with his daughter Lottie’s family. (R‑1, R‑4, R‑5)

Vestal Graves (11) was born about 1850 in AL, and died after 1880. He married Nancy ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1851 in AL. They were in the 1880 census for Baxter Twp., Garland Co., AR. All their children were born in AR. (R‑1)

Newt was in the 1900 census for Ouashita, Garland Co., AR, with him listed as Newt and his and his second wife as Lilley, b.c. 1876, with 2 children.

Julia Graves (12) was born about 1851 in AR, and died after 1870. Family tradition indicates that she married James Levin Cabler, son of Nicholas W. Cabler and Telitha Harper, by 1870 although there is no record of their marriage. Julia and ‘Leven’ were reported as being on the 1870 census in Montgomery Co., AR. A belief has been that James first married Malinda L. Wehut on 23 Dec. 1866 in Montgomery Co., AR, and that perhaps she died by 1870. Then, after Julia’s death, he supposedly remarried Malinda Wright as his third wife, although there is only one marriage recorded for them.

However, this story about a second and third marriage is wrong. Levin only married once, to Malinda L. Wehut. According to Shirley Shewmake Manning, President of Norman Historic Preservation Program, Inc., Norman, AR, the Montgomery County marriage book has a mistake in it. The actual document reads: “I, A. B. Anderson, an acting and duly commissioned Justice of the Peace in and for the county of Montgomery and State of Arkansas do hereby certify that on the 23^rd day of December, 1866 at the County of Montgomery and the State of Arkansas, I did duly join in marriage L. J. Cabler of Montgomery County, Arkansas, aged 27 years, and Malinda L. Wehut of Montgomery County, Arkansas, aged 17 years, and then and there declared them to be husband and wife. Given under my hand this 26^th day of December, 1866. A. B. Anderson JP, filed for record January 7, 1867.”

The correct interpretation of the 1870 census for Caddo Twp.., Montgomery Co., AR, is that it shows Malinda in the household of her in-laws, the Cablers, with James Levin Cabler’s sister Julie (not Julia Graves) also in the household.

L. J. and Malinda were listed on the 1880 and 1900 censuses in Montgomery Co., AR. In 1900, Malinda reported that she had been married 33 years and all three of her three children were living. She was born 2 Aug. 1849 in GA, and died 11 May 1928 in Montgomery Co., AR. James was born 10 Nov. 1839 in TN, and died 31 Oct. 1904.

It is not presently known whether Julia Graves married and had children. (R‑1, R‑5)

Adaline (or Adline) Graves (13) was born May 1854 in Arkansas, died 14 Aug. 1918[7] in Port Orford, Curry Co., OR, and was buried there. Adaline first married John Fearneyhough Phillips, son of Zachariah Phillips and Mary Elizabeth (“Polly”) Pyland. He was born about 1846 in TN, died 3 March 1900 in Skagit Co., WA, and was buried in Mt. Vernon Cem., Skagit Co., WA. They were recorded on the 1880 census in Little River, Jackson Co., AR. Adaline and John left Arkansas with her brother Leonard and moved first to Texas, living in Paris, Lamar Co., and possibly Decatur, Wise Co., before moving to Washington state by 1890. In 1900, she was recorded on the census in Skagit Co., WA as Addie Phillips, a widow, with four [sic] children born and four living. Her brother, L. Graves, born in May 1834 in GA, a gold miner, lived with them. After John’s death, Adaline married second Harry E. R. Bush and moved first to Centralia, WA, then to Grants Pass, OR in late 1906 or early 1907, and then to Springfield, OR. The last three months of her life were spent with her daughter Lula in Port Orford, OR. (R‑5, R‑7, R‑8)

In 2002, he was recorded on a list of people buried in McGill Cem., Garland Co., AR. He first married Sarah Emma Fisher, called Emma, daughter of Nicholas Fisher and Sarah L. (Garrett) Gray Kirkland Phillips, on 2 April 1871 in Montgomery Co., AR. They were married at the residence of Jack Phillips in Mountain Twp., Montgomery Co., AR As recorded in the Marriage Record (Bk. A, p. 278), Jesse was 18 years old and Emma was 15. She was born about 1856 in Arkansas, and died after 11 June 1880 when this family was recorded on the census in Garland Co., AR. He married second Margaret (Speer or Cornett) Crumpton, daughter of John Speer and Elizabeth Mason (or Edward Cornett and Rebecca ‑‑‑‑‑‑), on 31 Jan. 1884 in Garland Co., AR. She was born about 1855 in AR, died 5 May 1884 in Little Rock, AR (or Cedar Glades, Garland Co., AR per R‑5) at the birth of their child. She was recorded on the 1880 census in Garland Co., AR as Margaret Crumpton living with her mother Rebecca Cornett and her two Crumpton sons. Jesse married third Nancy (Wilborn) Kyle Cuttler on 19 Sept. 1889. She was born in about 1856 in AR, died 20 Nov. 1932, and was buried in McGill Cem. All his children were born in AR. He was listed with his family in the 1880 census for Garland Co., AR. Nancy first married John B. Kyle; their son Isaac, born 15 Dec. 1879 married Louisa (“Sis”) Graves, daughter of Aaron Graves (#10). Nancy married second Samuel B. Cuttler and had a son, Prince Sylvester Cuttler, born in 1882. Nancy was recorded on the 1920 census in Garland Co., AR; her daughter Lucinda and son-in-law Benjamin Hogue lived with her. In 1930, she lived with her widowed son William in Hot Springs, Garland Co., AR.
