DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES AND ANN ELLIS OF SAWBRIDGEWORTH, HERTFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

James Graves (1) was probably born about 1750, possibly in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England. He married Ann Ellis on 20 Oct. 1775 in Sawbridgeworth.

The map below shows Sawbridgeworth in relation to Hatfield, London, and Gravesend (just east of London, on the river Thames, where some of this family occasionally lived). (Hatfield is marked by A and Sawbridgeworth is marked by B on the map.) Because of where they lived, it seems possible that this family may be related to the Graves families of the Hertford/Harlow area (see this section on the charts page of the GFA website), including genealogy 168 (Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT) and genealogy 169 (Capt. William Graves (2) was born about 1781 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, England. He married Ann Bartrop on 12 April 1801 in Harlow, Essex, England. She was born about 1781 in Essex. They were in the 1841 census for Harlow, Essex, with son Charles, 20, and grandchildren Sarah Springham, 14, and Elizabeth Springham, 8, living with them. He was a shoemaker. All their children were born in Harlow, Essex.

The map below shows that Sawbridgeworth is only about 5 miles north of Harlow and about 5 miles south of Bishop’s Stortford, both places where this family lived. (R‑2)

Sarah Graves (4) was born 6 Dec. 1804 in Harlow, Essex. She married Charles Springham, son of Thomas Springham and Frances (“Fanny”) Hills, on 15 Jan. 1827 in Harlow, Essex. He was born about 1803 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. All their children were born in Harlow, Essex. They couldn’t be found in the 1841 census, and their children, Sarah and Elizabeth, were living with her parents in 1841. (R‑2)

She was born about 1821 in Sawbridgeworth. They were in the 1841 census for Harlow, Essex, with their first 2 children. They were in the 1871 census for Harlow, Essex, with son Charles, 30, unmarried. Hannah was in the 1881 census for Harlow, Essex, listed as unmarried, charwoman, with her unmarried daughter Hannah. Charles Graves (8) was born about 1818 in Harlow, Essex. He married Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1822 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. They were in the 1851 census for Bishops Stortford, District of Rochester, Hertfordshire. They were in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. He was a labourer in 1951, a barge labourer in 1861, and an agricultural labourer in 1871. A granddaughter, Ellen Graves, 4, was living with them in 1871.

She married Samuel Burles, son of Thomas Burles and Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 12 July 1845 in Epping, Essex. He was born before 8 Dec. 1822 in Sheering, Essex, and died about 1907 in Gravesend, Kent. (R‑2)

William Graves (17) was born about 1847 in Harlow, Essex. He married Mary A. E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1843 in North Hykeham, near Lincoln, Lincolnshire. They were in the 1881 census for Acton, Middlesex, when they were managing a laundry works.

CHILDREN OF CHARLES GRAVES (8) AND SARAH ------

Henry (“Harry”) Graves (21) was born about 1855 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire. He married Isabella Berrett, daughter of William Berrett, on 24 May 1885 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire[1]. She was born about 1865 in Chelsea, London. They were in the 1891 census for 2 Edith Villas, Tottenham, Middlesex. They were in the 1901 census for 71 Truro Rd., Wood Green, Middlesex. Isabella was in the 1911 census for North End and Buckland, Portsmouth, Hampshire, listed as married, but her husband was not in the household, probably because she had gone to help deliver and look after her new granddaughter who was just 2 months old. However, he has not been found in any other household in 1911. He was listed as a railway servant (porter) in 1891, and a railway porter foreman in 1901. All their children were born in Wood Green, Middlesex.

She was born about 1856 in Brentwood, Essex, and died in 1908 in Gravesend, Kent. Their first child was born in Brentwood, Essex, and all the others in Gravesend, Kent. (R‑2)

He was born about 1842 in Farnborough, Hampshire, and died in 1879 in South Africa (perhaps at the beginning of the first Boer War). She married second David Busby in 1884 in Gravesend, Kent. He was born about 1861 in Northampton, and died in 1890. (R‑2)

She married John William Warner, daughter of Henry Warner and Martha (“Chary”) Cherry, on 17 Aug. 1880 in Gravesend, Kent. He was born 12 Aug. 1861 in Aldershot, Hampshire. CHILDREN OF HENRY GRAVES (21) AND ISABELLA BERRETT

Florence Lillian Graves (31) was born in the Jan.-March quarter 1885 in Wood Green (or Islington)[2], Middlesex, and died about 1980 at 94 in Quebec, Canada. She married Arthur Percival Millen, son of Edward Millen and Mary A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 16 April 1906 at Saint Michael’s Church in the parish of Wood Green, Middlesex. According to their marriage certificate, Arthur was a news agent , her father was foreman porter G.E.R., and his father was a pianoforte maker. Arthur was born about 1880 in St. Pancras, Middlesex, and died about 1960 at 82 in Quebec, Canada. He was with his family in the 1881 census for Kentish Town, St. Pancras, Marylebone, London.

Arthur was said to be a veteran of the second Boer War (1899-1902 in South Africa). (R‑1)

Charles Frederick Graves (32) was born about 1888 in Wood Green or Bowes Park, Middlesex. He married Florence ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1910. She was born about 1888 in Islington, London. They were in the 1911 census for North End and Buckland, Portsmouth, Hampshire, with her mother living with them, listed as maternity nurse. At that time, they had been married less than a year, and their daughter was 2 months old.

He was born 11 Jan. 1878 in Hadleigh, Essex, and died 15 March 1961 in Belvedere, Kent. All their children were born and died in Gravesend. (R‑2)
