DESCENDANTS
OF SAMPSON GRAVES OF BLADEN CO., NC
GENERATION
1
Sampson Graves (1)
was born about 1774 in NC, probably in Bladen Co., and may have died by 1830,
since he has not been found in that census. He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He was in the 1800, 1810, and 1820
censuses for Bladen Co., NC. It
appears that the oldest son and at least one of the older daughters of Sampson
may not have lived, since only two children were listed in the 1810 and 1820
censuses.
Children - Graves
2. son, b.c. 1790-1800. Not in 1810 census.
3. daughter, b.c. 1790-1800.
4. daughter, b.c. 1790-1800.
5. Nathaniel Graves, b. 3 Dec. 1803, m. Lucy
Cheshire, d. 1870-1880.
6. daughter, b. 1800-1810. This may be one of the daughters listed
in the 1800 census.
GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF SAMPSON GRAVES (1)
Nathaniel Graves
(or Greaves) (5) was born 3 (or 29[1])
Dec. 1803, possibly in Cumberland Co. (but more likely in Bladen Co.), NC, and
died after 1870 and probably before 1880 (since he has not been found in the
1880 census). He married Lucy
Cheshire, possibly a daughter of Richard Cheshire and Prudence ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1805 in Bladen Co.,
NC, and died in 1841. They lived
in Bladen Co. Documentation is
from tombstones, CSA Army records, old Bible records, and census records.
In the 1800 NC census,
there was Benjamin Graves in Brunswick Co., Hardy Graves in Robeson Co., and
Sampson Graves in Bladen Co. In
the 1810 NC census, there was Hardy Graves in Robeson Co. and Sampson Graves in
Bladen Co. In the 1820 NC census,
there was Sampson Graves in Bladen Co., and Benjamin and Joseph Graves in
Brunswick Co. In the 1830 NC
census, Nathaniel Graves was listed in Bladen Co. It seems likely that Sampson Graves was Nathaniel's father,
based on Nathaniel's naming his third son Sampson.
The 1850 census for
Robeson Co., NC (enumerated on Aug. 13), lists Nathan, his wife, and all his
children. The 1850 census for
Bladen Co., NC (enumerated Aug. 26), also lists oldest son Mordecai. The 1860 census for Bladen Co., NC
lists the family with their ages and occupations as follows: S. B. (Sampson)
Graves, 27, turpentine; J. F. (John F.) Graves, 30, turpentine; Nathaniel
Graves, 57, cooper; Lucy Graves, 53, domestic; Nathan Graves, 24, turpentine;
Lydia Graves, 21, domestic; M. A. Graves, 17, domestic; S. L.
Graves, 11, Catherine Graves (Sampson's wife?), 24, domestic. Note that in 1860, Bladen Co. had 500
turpentine stills, and turpentine was the number one product in the county.
It is likely that
this Graves family is part of the Graves/Greaves families of Caroline Co.,
Albemarle Co. & Halifax Co., VA and SC, which include genealogies 18, 49,
145, 217, and 906. Marion Co., SC,
where some of the other families lived is not very far over the state line from
Cumberland, Robeson, and Bladen counties, NC. There is also the shared tradition of the surname being
spelled Greaves, and some of the names were similar.
His first 6
children were born in Bladen Co., NC, and the last 2 in Robeson Co., NC,
according to the 1850 census for Robeson Co., NC.
Nathan R. Graves
and Sampson Graves both served in the Confederate Army in the Civil War, and
John F. Graves served in the Confederate Navy (or in the Army). (R‑1)
