Revised 17 April 2005, Gen. 271
DESCENDANTS OF BENJAMIN
GRAVES AND SALLY TILDEN OF VT
GENERATION 1
Benjamin Graves (1) was probably
born about 1770-75, and may have been the one who died 15 Jan. 1841 in Chester,
VT. He married Sally Tilden, probably 1780-85. She was probably born about 1766-1784,
according to the 1810 census. Their
names were given on the death record of their son, Horace Graves, in Ludlow,
VT. They apparently lived in Ludlow and
Chester, VT.
It was probably this Benjamin who
secondly married Mrs. Amy Whitman on 30 Jan. 1825 in Windsor, VT, since his son
Benjamin seems to have never married.
This second marriage seems to be supported by the 1820 census, which
does not show a female of his wife’s age, and the 1830 census, which shows a
female born about 1780-1790 (probably the second wife).
Was this Benjamin born 12 March
1754 in Waterbury, CT (or VT?), or was it his father, son of Cornelius and
Hannah?
Benjamin Graves may be descended
from immigrant Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT.
Benjamin Graves was in the 1810 (p.
672), 1820 (p. 421), and 1830 (p. 103) censuses for Ludlow, Windsor Co.,
VT. (R‑1)

that Ira was a son of Benjamin Graves has not yet been found. However, they lived in the same area, the
family lore of R‑4, and the census records support the relationship.
They were in the 1850 census for
Ludlow, Windsor Co., VA, page 273, living next door to his brother Emory. They were in the 1860 census for Ludlow,
Windsor Co., VT, page 171, with all the children, all born in VT. The 1870 and 1880 censuses for Ludlow,
