John Graves (1) was born in 1760 in what later became the U.S. He is said to have been a United Empire Loyalist (UEL), the group that was opposed to the American Revolution, and therefore left the U.S. for Canada about 1780. The family is believed to be originally from Yorkshire, England. He married Mary Wragg, daughter of Mary Darling. She was born in Dec. 1760 in Ecclesfield, York, England, and died 2 April 1825 in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada.. (R‑3)

According to the 1900 census, 4 of their 6 children were living; he was born in French Canada and she was born in English Canada; and he immigrated to the U.S. in 1859 and she in 1867. She had first married Merlin Hill, and had one son by that marriage, Gerald Lynn Hill.
