Revised 27 April 2004, Gen. 286
DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GRAVES
AND SUSAN MORAN OF VA
GENERATION 1
James Graves (1) was born 5 April
1797 in VA, died by 1870[1]
in VA, and was buried in VA. He married
Susan Moran on 7 Aug. 1820. She was
born 20 Aug. 1797 in VA, probably Albemarle Co., and died and was buried in
Nelson Co., VA. All their children were born in Fluvanna Co., VA.
According to R‑2, it is
believed that this family was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA, perhaps
through the Solomon Graves branch. Some
of the Graves names that seem to be associated are Solomon, Spivey, Samuel,
Caroline, and Seaton, all from the area of Crozet, Albemarle Co., VA.
R‑1 states that the Graveses
in his family came primarily from Nelson Co. (created in 1807 from Amherst
Co.), Albemarle Co. (created in 1744 from Goochland and Louisa counties), and
Fluvanna Co. (created in 1777 from Albemarle Co.) in VA. The names Seaton and Rice seem to be closely
associated with his family.
In the 1870 census there were 2 men
named Seaton Graves in Virginia: Seaton T. Graves in Lovingston, Nelson Co.,
VA, and Seaton H. Graves in Samuel Miller, Albemarle Co., VA. In the 1880 census there were still 2 men named
Seaton Graves in Virginia: Seaton T. Graves in Goodson, Washington Co., VA, and
Seaton H. Graves in Samuel Miller, Albemarle Co., VA. In the 1920 census, these 2 men lived in Waynesville, Haywood
Co., NC, and White Hall, Albemarle Co., VA, respectively. Also in the 1880 census for Samuel Miller,
VA, were Hugh R. Graves (genealogy 234), William Graves, and Alfred Graves,
possibly related to James Graves. There
was also a Seaton Eldridge Graves, born 1825, who was a son of Thomas Graves
and Judith Turner, and descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (genealogy
169). (R‑1, R‑2)

An article in The Citizen newspaper, datelined Waynesville, Jan. 18, follows.
"Col. S. T. Graves Dies At
Home Near Waynesville
Funeral Service To Be Held Today
At 3 O'Clock
Col. S. T. Graves, one of Haywood
County's best known citizens, died this morning at 10:15 o'clock at his
residence about three miles from here.
Colonel Graves sustained a fall while walking in the house about three
weeks ago and fractured his hip. He had
been in bad health for several months and the injury contributed to hastening
his death.
He was born in Fluvanna Co., Va.,
on Oct. 7, 1857, and during his early life was engaged in the tobacco warehouse
business in Bristol, Va. He moved to
Waynesville about 25 years ago and bought the Goodyear apple orchard, since
known as the Graves Orchard, where his present residence is situated.
After coming to this State, Colonel
Graves spent most of his time in buying up large tracts of timber land in the
mountainous sections of this State, Georgia, and South Carolina. His judgment of lands and timber was
unusually sound.
Colonel Graves was a gentleman of
the old school, gallant, courteous, and considerate. Indeed, the dominant note of his character was an unfailing
consideration for others. His manner was
the same to prince or pauper, always courteous, always considerate, and always
kind. He did a vast deal of good as he
passed through life, and the people of this community will miss him.
Colonel Graves is survived by his
wife, Mrs. Fannie R. Graves, one son, J. O. Graves, of Waynesville, and one
daughter, Mrs. C. G. Kinsey, of Orlando, Fla., and two grandsons, Frank Kinsey,
Jr., of Philadelphia, and J. O. Graves, of Waynesville; one sister, Mrs. Mattie
Pugh, and two brothers, Fred Graves, and N. P. Graves, all of Lovington, Va.
Funeral services will be held
tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Presbyterian Church and the Rev. S. R.
Crockett, former pastor of the church but now of Franklin, will come here to
conduct the services. At the conclusion
of the services, interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery."
