Revised 13 Feb. 2021, Gen. 289

Josiah Graves (1) died of smallpox in the Revolutionary War.  He lived in MA.  He may have been born about 1720-30, and reportedly died 20 July 1777 according to p. 752 of Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors in the American Revolution.  Both Josiah, Sr. and Josiah, Jr. are listed in a group of men mustered between Jan. 20, 1777 and June 1, 1778 by Trueman Wheler, Muster Master for Berkshire Co., [MA] and were from “N. Briton”.  It is possible that he was descended from Rear Admiral Thomas Graves of Charlestown, MA (genealogy 28).

Other genealogies probably connected with this family are for Elijah Graves (genealogy 10), Cathrine Graves (genealogy 493), and Josiah Graves (genealogy 605).  (R‑5)

John Beard Graves (8) was born about 1795 in NY.  He married Catherine Harder (or Hardy according to the marriage record) on 19 April 1827.  The entire family moved from Ontario to Huron Co., MI in 1863.  In 1866, John's wife Catherine returned to Canada to visit and died.  John later returned also and died in Canada.  They were listed in Aldborough Twp., Elgin Co., Ontario, Canada on the census taken in January 1852 under the surname Greaves.  Their first child was born in NY and the others in Canada.

R‑13 found a marriage record at St. Thomas United Church, Elgin Co., Ontario, 19 April 1827, "John B. Graves of Ekfrid, yeoman, and Catherine Hardy [notice this says Hardy, not Harder] of Mosa, spinster, were this day married by me, by banns.  Witnesses: Elijah Mann, Peter Graves, Mary Graves, Alymer, Elgin Co."  (R‑8, R‑12, R‑13)

+53.   Catherine Graves, b. May 1846, m. Henry D. Pincumbe, c. 1862-64, d. 17 Feb. 1919.

Peter Graves (9) was born about 1799-1800 in NY (in the U.S. according to the 1851-52 and the 1861 censuses for Elkfrid Twp., Middlesex Co., Ontario, Canada), died before 1871, and was buried at the Big Bend Pioneer Cem., Mosa, Middlesex Co, Ontario, Canada.  He was naturalized as a Canadian citizen in 1841, therefore should have immigrated from the U.S. before 1834.

He first married Mary Mann on 6 Nov. 1825 in the Old English Church in St. Thomas, London Co., Ontario Canada.  He married second Hannah Warren (or Warner per R‑8).  She was born about 1817-19 in Canada (according to the census records), although some family members say Pontiac, MI.  In the 1871 census for Elkfrid Twp., Middlesex Co., Hannah was listed with children Euphoma through Ann, all apparently born Ontario, but Peter was not included and had apparently died by that time.  Also on the census was a Jane Graves, age 30, born Ontario.

According to the census records, Peter was a shoemaker and a farmer, and they were Baptists.

There was a James Graves living about 5 miles from Peter Graves in the 1851 census whose age and background were similar.  James's wife was Mary, born in the U.S. of German ancestry, age 48.  Also living with them was a widow Mary Graves, age 84, born in the U.S. (probably his mother?).  Both families were Baptist.  There is no proof of realtionship between James and Peter, but they may have been brothers.

The census information seems to be at odds with the family legend (from Albert Charles Graves), that the family in North America was the result of the migration of a group (number unknown) of brothers who came to Canada in the 1800's from Ireland.

According to R‑7, "This is borne out by the fact that we did possess a series of tintypes that my father had.  They were of relatives in Ireland; the holder had the name of a photographer in Dublin.  Unfortunately, in the early sixties my father lent these to the local museum which lost them.  The costumes of the women in the pictures were circa 1840's.  This would place the migration at the time of the potato famines and the arrival of the death boats in the port of Halifax. As the ships were overloaded and their human cargos often succumbed to disease to the extent that many of these ships arrived with as much as 9/10ths of their passengers dead or dying, the information on these people is almost nonexistant."

"There are several family stories about the family at this time, but very little in the way of documented proof to back them up.  The family name was said to be O'Graves, the O being dropped when we came to Canada.  We do know that in the 1840's the name of Peter Warren Graves can be found in the records in Ontario, Canada, including Glencoe, Ontario.  Sometime after 1867 the family disappears from Canadian records.  Family stories place them in the U.S.A. in Pennsylvania, and finally in North Dakota (specifically Langdon and Pembina, N.D.), where the documentation paper trail is picked up again."  (R‑1, R‑7, R‑8, R‑13)

Abraham Graves (14) was born 2 June 1806 in New York according to censuses, and probably died 18 May 1885 in Gage Co., NE, probably in rural Pickrell, NE[1].  He was a farmer and a Protestant.  When he was naturalized in Gage Co., Nebraska on 10 Oct. 1862, Abraham was listed as “a native of The Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.  Correspondence R‑2 received from the National Archives of Canada indicates that Abraham had taken the oath of allegiance to become a citizen of Canada (perhaps to allow him to purchase land); therefore, he had to renounce his adopted country to become an American citizen (again) in 1862.

Abraham married Nancy Seidan (or Suydan or Suydam) on 2 June 1830 in St. Thomas, London Co., Ontario, Canada in a marriage performed by Rev. Mark Bureham.  The Old English Church (Anglican) where they were married was the first church in St. Thomas.  Witnesses to the marriage were Elijah Mann, Christopher Long, and Benjamin Fuller.

Nancy was born 22 Nov. 1813 in Canada, and probably died 2 June 1885, probably in Pickrell, Gage Co., NE, although R‑2 has been told that Nancy died before Abraham.  Both Nancy and Abraham were most likely buried at the old Chrisman Cem. in Pickrell, NE, since it was just down the road from their son Enoch’s home where they were living when they died.  Nancy was a Baptist, daughter of Humphrey Suydan and Anna Smith.  Her father was born in New York and her mother in Canada.  She was descended from Rev. John Smith who arrived in 1630 on the White Angel.  Her ancestors were among the 40 families that walked from the Delaware River to Niagara-on-the Lake, the area just west of Niagara Falls, in Revolutionary War times.  They were Loyalists.

Abraham and his family may have stayed in Quebec for awhile; then were in the St. Thomas, Ontario area until about 1859-1860, when they all moved to Gage Co., Nebraska except for Almirah.  Nebraska became a state in 1867.  There is a Gage County Honor Roll which lists the settlers who owned land before statehood, and Abraham Graves and some of his sons are on that list.  Abraham, Nancy, Ann, Enoch, Lewis, and Henry were listed on the 1860 census for Gage Territory.

Henry Leonard Graves, grandson of Abraham Graves, wrote the following account: “The 1st Graves we know of came from Dublin, Ireland.  They came with a family by the name of Dixon and there were 18 children in the group.  They came by sail boat and landed on Lake Erie off the shore of Ontario.  They settled along the St. Lawrence River in Quebec.  There is a discrepancy in the date they came to Canada, or what date they moved to Nebraska.  They nearly starved in Quebec, and three of Abraham’s brothers were killed by the Indians coming across the territory on the way to Nebraska.  They think a sister stayed in Ontario and maybe others too.”  This information is questionable according to R‑2.

Abraham’s birthplace was listed as “State New York” on the 1851 census of Cardoc Township.  Their children were born in Canada, probably in St. Thomas.

It is possible that Abraham Graves was related to a James Graves who lived in the vicinity of St. Thomas, Ontario at the same time.  (R‑1, R‑2)

Although they are obviously not the same person, it seems possible that there is some sort of close connection between Martin Clark Graves and the Martin Graves, born 23 Feb. 1766 in Sunderland, MA, son of Reuben Graves and Hannah Fuller, in genealogy 168.  The children of that Martin Graves included Charlotte, Martin and Amos.  (R‑20, R‑22)

Bradley Graves (28) was born about 1830 in PA, and probably died 2 May 1908 in Brooks, Newaygo Co., MI (or possibly 1908 in Centerville, Crawford Co., PA).  He married Elizabeth Reynolds, daughter of William Reynolds and Elizabeth E. Navy.  She was born about 1833-1835 in Crawford Co., PA, and died 1871-1880 in PA.

Bradley was in the 1850 census for Sparta Twp., Crawford Co., PA, page 276, house 441, living with his parents.  He was in the 1870 census for Steuben Twp., Crawford Co., PA, page 563, house 81, with his wife and 3 children.  He was a farmer.  He was not in the 1880 census, but his wife and one son were in the 1880 census for Steuben Twp., Crawford Co., PA, page 184B, house 120.

The children (as listed by R‑2) were Nicholas, Peter, Mattie, Dinah, and Erwin.  However, the 1870 and 1880 censuses list children Allen G. (b.c. 1855), Lerue (b.c. 1858), Malissa (b.c. 1861), and Irvin (b.c. 1873).  It is evident that Nicholas and Lerue are the same person, since they are both shown with a wife named Janet/Gennett in the 1880 and 1920 censuses.  Irvin is the same as Erwin.  It seems likely that Allen G. was the same as Peter.  In the 1880 census, Elizabeth was living with son Irvin, and next door were her married sons Allen and Lerue.  (R‑2, R‑22, R‑26)

Catherine (or Katherine) Graves (53), called Katie in her obituary, was born in May 1846 in Ontario, Canada or in Bay Port, Huron Co. (now Sanilac Co.), MI[2], and died 31 Dec. 1919 in Toledo, Lucas Co., OH “while visiting her daughter, Mrs. Wilson” according to the 7 Feb. 1919 newspaper Pigeon Progress in Huron Co., MI.  The obituary also states she was born in Huron County, Ontario 78 years ago, married Henry 60 years ago, and moved to Michigan about 50 years ago.  She married Henry D. Pincumbe in 1862-64 in Canada.  On daughter Kate’s marriage record, he is listed as Hy Pincumbe.  He was born 26 Nov. 1837 in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the illigitmate son of ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Drury and Catherine Pincumbe, and died 18 March 1912.  Catherine Pincumbe worked for the Drury family in Detroit and became pregnant by a son in the family when she was fifteen.  According to a family story, the Drury father deeded Flat Iron Block in Detroit to Henry, but Catherine ripped it up.  It has not been confirmed that Henry’s mother’s first name was Catherine; the source of the Pincumbe surname is unknown - it may be his mother’s maiden name or perhaps a stepfather’s surname.

Katie and Henry were buried in Grant Township Cem., Gagetown, Tuscola Co., MI.  They had 8 children, the first three born in Canada, and the others in Michigan.  (R‑11, R‑12, R‑13)

Peter Warren Graves (55) was born 25 Dec. 1848 in St. Thomas, Ontario, and died 15 Jan. 1917 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.  He married Lucinda Rae (or Rea), daughter of James Rea and Ellen ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 15 June 1874 in Kingsville, Ontario.  She was born 15 March 1856 in Omennse, Ontario (St. Thomas area), died 3 June 1910, and was buried in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

According to R‑9, Lucinda picked herbs and roots which she used to treat the sick and was referred to as the “Herb Doctor”.  It was also said that she was the first white woman in her area of North Dakota, probably the Pembina-Langdon area.  In a story submitted by R‑14, “The Rae name has an interesting yarn to it.  Rae’s Magic Liniment” was initially compounded by a Mr. Micheal (?) Whyland of Dublin Ireland and first marketed in 1776.  In 1781 Whyland sold the rights to Mrs. Rae-his wife’s Mother.  She moved from Ireland to Belleveille Ont. in 1827 where she continued to manufacture and sell the liniment…moved to Beaulieau N. Dakota where she also made and sold the liniment…In 1890 the rights to the liniment were sold to a Mr. Getman of Olga N. Dakota who was to market it as “Getman’s Liniment”.  He was to pay royalties to Mrs. Graves or turn it back to her in 1926‑he died in 1922 and the rights reverted to Mrs. Graves.  The patent eventually belonged to a George Martial Graves who, in 1935‑sold the rights to the “Rae’s Chemical Company Syndicate” in Saskatoon (CAN).”

It is thought this family moved to Harvey/Loma, ND about 1882, where they remained until 1910 when Peter and Lucinda parted company, and Peter moved to Saskatoon.  Some of the children (George, Lycomedes, James, Charles, and Alexander) moved to Saskatchewan about 1903 and homesteaded around Saskatoon and Dundurn.  (R‑7, R‑8, R‑9, R‑14)

Joseph immigrated to the U.S. in 1851 at the age of about 25.  The story goes that he ran away from home when he was fifteen and sailed the Seven Seas.  He landed in New Orleans and went with a wagon train to Nebraska.  He met Anna Graves, who was on another wagon train traveling down from Canada.

Joseph was a strong member of the Catholic Church and attended services in the first Catholic meeting place which was the old Graff home.  It was a couple of miles down the road, east of the Martin homestead.  Anna, being a Baptist, raised their children in the faith of her ancestors.  (R‑2, R‑4)

William Fredrick Graves (290) was born 22 March 1890 in Webber, Jewell Co., KS, and died 7 Nov. 1958 in Dayton, Liberty Co., TX.  He married Eva Rena Nottingham, daughter of Joseph Nottingham and Minnie Bell Nickels, on 24 Dec. 1918 in Crosby, Harris Co., TX.  She was born 20 July 1899 in Dunnegan, Polk Co., MO, and died 2 Feb. 1989 in Liberty, Liberty Co., TX.  Joseph was born 6 Nov. 1856 and Minnie was born 27 May 1866.

William moved with his parents to Liberty Co., TX in 1911.  He and Rena lived on a rice farm near Dayton for several years; when their children were old enough to attend school, they moved to Dayton where William raised rice and owned cattle.  He was a partner in Holbrook and Graves, a contracting and road-building firm.  They were buried in Magnolia Park Cem., Dayton, TX.

The following article was in The Vindicator of Liberty Co., Texas, posted Nov. 17, 2016 on their website.

Graves family featured in rice farming exhibit

The rice farming exhibit continues to draw people to The Old School Museum in Dayton, located behind Walgreens. It is open on Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and admission is free. The exhibit features many multi-generational rice farming families who came to Dayton at the turn of the 20th century or in its early decades to make Dayton and the surrounding area their home.

One family who arrived in 1911 was the William Henry Graves family.  He and his wife, Ella, bought land along today’s Highway 146 to raise vegetables, chickens, and cows. They had 11 children, one of whom was Will, who was born in 1890.

Will was 21 when the family reached Dayton, and he soon began buying his own land, accumulating 800 acres along today’s FM 1960. He married Rena Nottingham in 1918, and they had six children: Blackie, Gordon, Lois, Adelene, Glenda, Faye and J. W.

Farming alone until his sons came of age, he cultivated rice, his name becoming synonymous locally with rice farming. In the 1940s, the government required rice farmers to have allotments in order to continue what they had done for decades. Will helped his sons Blackie, Gordon and J.W. get allotments so they could begin farming.

Will later formed a partnership with Chester Holbrook in the contracting business that they called Graves & Holbrook. They pioneered modern road construction, building the first sand/shell base for an asphalt road - State Highway 146 to Mont Belvieu from Dayton.

In addition to farming rice, Will farmed soybean and milo. He was still farming when he passed away in 1958.”  (R‑10)
