DESCENDANTS OF ALICE MALINDA GRAVES AND WELLS GODWIN
OF SC & AL
GENERATION 1
Alice Malinda Graves (1), called "Molindy" or Malinda, was born about 1813 in SC, and died in 1872 in AL. She married Wells Godwin in about 1832. He was born about 1791 in NC, and died 31 March 1873 in Butler Co., AL. He may be descended from the Godwins of Isle of Wight Co., VA, who spread out through NC and SC. There is a family story that his ancestors owned a porcelain factory in England but had to leave because they took the wrong side against the king.
Alice and Wells were in Russell Co., AL by 1832, living there for over 10 years, then went to Butler Co., AL in 1858. It is there that they lived out the remainder of their lives.
A tragic incident took place in 1866 in Butler Co. Their second to youngest son, Frank, was killed by a Yankee soldier during the reconstruction period. This outraged the community and was mentioned in Wells Godwin's obituary in 1873.
Malinda may have had a brother, Thomas Graves, who married Catherine Godwin, a sister of Wells Godwin. They were living in Union Springs, AL in 1858.
All the children of Wells and Malinda were born in Russell Co., AL, with the possible exception of the first one. (R-1, R-2)
