DESCENDANTS OF MARY GRAVES AND JOSEPH ELLIS

OF DEDHAM, MA

GENERATION 1

Mary Graves (1) is said to have been born in 1668 in Dedham, MA. However, no source for either the year or the place has been found, and the Dedham town records do not show this birth. She married Joseph Ellis on 25 Oct. 1688 in Dedham, MA[1]. He may have been born in Oct. 1666. His father may be Richard Ellis of Dedham, although there were others named Joseph Ellis at about the same time. A John Ellis had a son Joseph about 1660, and Richard Ellis had a son Joseph in 1666.

It has been thought by some that Mary was a daughter of Benjamin Graves and Mary Hoar (Benjamin was a son of immigrant John Graves of Concord, MA). However, that Mary Graves married Benjamin Rice in 1691. Since no record can be found of Joseph’s death, and Joseph and Mary apparently had children until at least 1709, the Mary Graves who married Joseph Ellis does not appear to have been a daughter of Benjamin Graves.
