The following genealogy has been compiled by: Kenneth V.Graves, 20 Binney Circle, Wrentham, MA 02093. Additions and corrections are requested. It is desired to have this genealogy as complete as possible, and contain all descendants of James William Graves. Information needed includes birth, marriage, and death dates and places of both descendants and spouses, full names of descendants and spouses, names of parents of spouses, occupations, church memberships, interesting stories, addresses of descendants, and sources of information (for example, family Bible, cemetery records, etc.). It is the intention of the compiler to publish the corrected and expanded version of this as part of a book. It is also hoped that compiling and publishing this genealogy will help determine the ancestry of this part of the family.

The information in this genealogy is from the following sources. On the following pages, sources are indicated in parentheses by R-1, R-2, etc.

R-1. Mr. John F. Cooper, 1 Bulls Cliff, Garfield Rd., Felixstowe, Suffolk IP11 7PU, England.

James William Graves (1) was born in 1806 and died in 1850 at the age of 44 from T.B. He was a butcher. He married Mary Ann Pettigrew. She was born in 1819 and died in 1873.

After he died, she secondly married Charles Parker. He died about 1870. They had one child, John Parker, born in 1853. (R-1)

3. James Robert Graves, b. 1845, m. Susannah Harrison, 11 May 1873 (Spitalfields Christ Church, Stepney, London). She was b. 1844. Children unknown.

+4. Thomas William Graves, b. 1848, m. Jane Elizabeth May, 5 April 1887, d. 1933.

CHILDREN OF JAMES W. GRAVES (1) AND MARY A. PETTIGREW

Mary Ann Graves (2) was born in 1844 and died in 1886. She married George Taylor on 26 March 1865 in St. Peters, Stepney, London, England. He was born in 1818 and died in 1882. (R-1)

Thomas William Graves (4) was born in 1848, was christened 18 Aug. 1850 at St. Mary Whitechapel, Stepney, London, and died in 1933. After a variety of jobs, he joined the Army at the age of 19, was sent to India, and did not return until just before he married. He served in Afganistan, Burma, Ceylon, and Aden, as well as the northwest frontier of India. He married Jane Elizabeth May on 5 April 1887. She was born in 1859 and died in 1941. Their first child was born at Whitechapel, and the others at Woowich, London, England. (R-1)

+8. William John Graves, b. 26 Jan. 1890, m. Lillian White, 10 Sept. 1921, d. 13 April 1954.

9. Thomas James Graves, b. 28 Dec. 1891, never married, d. 14 Dec. 1932 (Quetta, India). A professional soldier.

+10. Henry Edward Graves, b. 17 Sept. 1902, m. Isabella Jane Willis, 21 Dec. 1937, d. 12 Oct. 1980.

CHILDREN OF THOMAS W. GRAVES (4) AND JANE E. MAY

Elizabeth Esther Graves (7) was born 20 June 1887 at Whitechapel, London, England, and died 1 Oct. 1959 in Woolwich, London. She married Francis Edward Cooper, a soldier, on 13 June 1907. He was born 27 Aug. 1885 in Edinburgh, Scotland, and died, still a soldier, 16 Sept. 1937 in Singapore. Their first 3 children were born in Perth, Scotland, and the last one in Woolwich. (R-1)

11. Maud Esther May Cooper, b. 12 July 1908, never married, d. 1989 (Wye, Kent, England). She was a civil servant.

12. Eva Cooper, b. 15 Dec. 1909, never married. She is a retired nurse, and was living in Wye in 1994.

13. George William Cooper, b. 25 June 1911, m. Jessie Way, 1957. No children. He was a professional photographer. Living in Romney Marsh, Kent in 1994.

+14. John Francis Cooper, b. 24 April 1914, m. Monica Gertrude Shaw, 26 Dec. 1939.

William John Graves (8) was born 26 Jan. 1890 in Woolwich, London, England, and died 13 April 1954. He was a professional soldier. He married Lillian White on 10 Sept. 1921. (R-1)

15. Joan Graves, m. Denis Kirkby. They were living in retirement in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England in 1994.

Henry ("Harry") Edward Graves (10) was born 17 Sept. 1902 and died 12 Oct. 1980, both in Woolwich, London, England. He married Isabella Jane Willis on 21 Dec. 1937. Harry joined the Army from school but left and emigrated to Australia about 1925. He joined the Western Australian Police, served 12 years, and returned to England. After marriage, he became a Probation Officer, working in Tower Bridge Court until his retirement. (R-1)

CHILDREN OF ELIZABETH E. GRAVES (7) AND FRANCIS E. COOPER

John Francis Cooper (14) was born 24 April 1914 in Woolwich, London, England. He spent his working life in the Royal Air Force, first as a mechanic, then during the 1939-45 war as a pilot. After the war he was an air traffic controller until retirement in 1964. He spent the years 1969 to 1990 in New Zealand. He married Monica Gertrude Shaw on 26 Dec. 1939. (R-1)

Jane Isabel Graves (16) was born 12 Oct. 1938. She married David Patrick Moakes. (R-1)

Gillian Margaret Graves (17) was born 14 Nov. 1940. She married Marcus Judd. She graduated from Cambridge Univ., and became a teacher. (R-1)

22. Eleanor Gillian Judd, b. 20 Jan. 1968. She is a Ph.D. physicist at Lawrence Berkeley Univ., San Francisco, CA.

23. Abigail Elizabeth Judd, b. 29 Dec. 1969. She is employed in the commercial world.

Roger Henry Willis Graves (18) was born 27 July 1942. He first married Jane Mitchell. He secondly married Penelope (Paddon) Brosselard. There were 2 children by the first marriage and none by the second. They were living in Canada in 1994. (R-1)

Jeremy Francis Cooper (19) was born 14 July 1947 in Wuppertal, Germany. He is a Chartered Accountant, and a university lecturer in Wellington, New Zealand. He married Caroline Mary Andrews in 1969 in London, England. (R-1)

Penelope Jane Moakes (20) was born 30 March 1961. She married Raymond McClure. (R-1)

Nicholas David Moakes (21) was born 11 April 1963. He married Elizabeth Nuttall. He was first in the Diplomatic Service, but felt that the rewards were better in banking, and was a banker in Hong Kong in 1994. (R-1)
