DESCENDANTS OF HANNAH GRAVES (OR GREAVES)
OF LONDON, ENGLAND & NSW, AUSTRALIA
GENERATION 1
Hannah Graves (1) was born 18 July 1802 in London, England, and was buried 9 April 1891 in New South Wales, Australia. Her death certificate lists her father's surname as Graves, a tinsmith. However, Rebecca, her daughter, named one of her children Hannah Greaves, possibly indicating that was the correct spelling of the family surname. Hannah married James Scott, a carpenter, about 1822 in London. He was born 5 June 1808, was baptized 1 July 1808, and died before 1834, son of James Scott and Ann of Bethnal Green, Middlesex (now London).
She secondly married William Bloomfield, son of William Bloomfield and Zophia ------, on 20 Dec. 1834 at St. Philip's Church, Sydney, NSW, Australia, by banns. He was a widower and a bricklayer or builder, born 21 March 1787 in Helmingham, Suffolk, England, and died 16 March 1852 at Copper Hill, Molong, Australia (although R-1 says he died about 1880-89 in Homebush, Sydney, NSW).
William had first married Frances Jane Mears in England. On a mild English summer day in 1833, William, Frances and their 11 children boarded the 513-ton ship Layton and left England for Australia. They arrived in Sydney Cove, Australia on 17 Dec. 1833. On the voyage from England, another son was born to William and Frances. This child, Hepzibah, died shortly after their arrival in Sydney, on 19 Jan. 1834 at the age of 6 weeks. Just four months after their arrival from England Frances became ill and died on 21 April 1834 and was buried the same day, recorded in the St. James Church register.
The oral history of the family indicates there was a falling-out between Hannah and William, as Hannah would not have anything to do with William's children by his first marriage.
Source R-1 lists child John Bloomfield, died at age 9 years, but does not list Urich Bloomfield, who was listed by R-2. (R-1, R-2)
