DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM EAVES OF VA,

FATHER OF GRAVES EAVES

GENERATION 1

William Eaves (1) was born in 1638 or 1640, died in 1679, and left a will.  The will was destroyed by fire, but a copy of the probate exists and names 8 children.  He lived in Northumberland Co., VA.  His father was Jon (or Jonathan) Eaves (or Eves), who arrived from England in 1636 and landed at Lynn Haven on the "Chesopean Shore" about where Little Creek, Va. is now located.  Could he or his father have married a Graves?

It is the opinion of many Eaves researchers that William married a Graves woman, possibly Flora or Elizabeth Graves, but there seems to be no documentation to substantiate this.  If William's wife was a descendant of Capt. Thomas Graves (genealogy 169), it is almost certain that she would have been a daughter of one of his two older sons, John2 Graves or Thomas2 Graves.  Unless she was a lot younger than her husband, Francis Graves, (previously thought to be the third son of Capt. Thomas Graves, but now in genealogy 220) would not have been old enough to have had a daughter who married William Eaves.

Based on the names in this genealogy, it seems possible that there is a connection with the family of Thomas Graves, b. 1691, who married Ann Davenport (previously thought to be a descendant of Capt. Thomas Graves, but now in genealogy 270).  ThomasŐs son, Thomas, m. Isabella Susan Bartlett, and had sons William Bartlett and Bartlett O. Graves.  Thomas had another son, John Graves, who had a daughter Ann who married Bartlett Yancey.  On the other hand, since the Bartlett and Yancey families lived in the same areas as the Eaves family, there may have been no close connection with the family of the Thomas Graves who married Ann Davenport.

All the children were born in Northumberland Co., VA.  (R‑1, R‑3)
