DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES OF ROXBURY, MA

GENERATION 1

John Graves (1) was probably born about 1590-1595 in England, died 4 Nov. 1644 in Roxbury, MA, and was buried 15 Nov. 1644 in Roxbury.  He arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in May 1633 with his wife, who died soon after, and 5 children.  He probably arrived in the Mary and Jane.  He was from Nazing, Essex, England.  He married his second wife, Judith Alward (or Allard) in Dec. 1635.  She was born about 1600 in England, and died 22 Oct. 1683 in Roxbury.  JohnÕs mother[1] must have come with him also, since Savage says she was about 80 in 1644 (b.c. 1564) and died 24 Jan. 1645.

John Graves had a sister Lydia, who married ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Ford.  The mother of JohnÕs daughter Sarah may have been a daughter of Thomas Finch of Hertford, county of Hertford, England.

The Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants to New England, 1620-1650 by Charles Edward Banks, Baltimore, 1957, lists John Graves from Nazing and Harlow, Essex, England, emigrating to Roxbury, MA.

Savage (pp. 294-295) states: John Graves of Roxbury came in May 1633 with wife, who died soon after, and 5 children: John, Samuel, Jonathan, Sarah, and Mary, according to the church record.  The William and Jane came in that month but, as Winthrop says, she brought only 30 passengers.  I think these came, perhaps that month in the other ship, Mary and Jane, which had 196.  In Dec. 1635 he married Judith Alward, or Allard, had Hannah, born 8 Sept. 1636; was freeman 18 April 1637, and died 4 Nov. 1644.  Elliot calls him Ògodly brotherÓ and after mention, next to him, of funeral of ÒThomas Ruggles, a godly brotherÓ adds: Òthese two broke the knot first of the Nazing Christians.  I mean they first died of all those Christians that came from that town in England.Ó  As he, also, came from that little town, we know how he must have felt their loss.  Fourth after death of the son we read in the record Jan. Òabout 24 day, old mother Graves died.  She was about 80 years of age.Ó  In his will, of 1 Nov. 1644, he provides for his mother, his wife, and all the children.  Executrix Sarah, who was probably dead; but on 26 Nov. of the next year his son John made his will, and gives to all his brothers and sisters, yet more to Sarah than the other two, and to his fatherÕs widow.  On 5 Dec. 1645, the writer adds to his sad list: ÒJohn Graves, a godly young man, eldest son of him who died the year before.Ó  The widow Judith married 2 June 1646, William Potter, survived him and married 13 Dec. 1654, Samuel Finch; and Hannah married 24 May 1654, John Mayo.

According to Thomas LechfordÕs Notebook, 1885, pp. 38-39: ÒTo all to whome these presents shall come greeting, Knowe yee that I John Graves[2] of Roxbury in New England, Cowleech, guardian of Sarah Graves my Daughter under age, Doe hereby constitute and make my wellbeloved friends Robert Wood of Harlowe in the County of Essex, shoomaker, and Nicholas Campe of Nasing in the said County, husbandman, my true and lawfull Attorneys joyntly and severally for me & in myne name and my said daughters name to demand and receive by suit of law if need be to recover of Lydia Ford late of Nasing aforesaid, widdow, my Sister, the summe of seaven pounds and tenne shillings, for six yeares rent of a certaine peice of meadow in Nasing aforesaid, to be ended the Twenty first day of March next ensuing the date hereof, being part of my said daughterÕs legacy, according to the last will and Testament of Thomas Finch[3] late of Hertford in the county of Hertford, yoeman, deceased.  And acquittance or acquittances therefore in my name and my said Daughters name to make upon such receipt, and the same money received to return unto my wellbeloved friend Nicholas Parker of Boston in New England, Planter, whome I have appointed to receive the same... (dated 23 Nov. 1638)

From The Town of Roxbury, Francis S. Drake, 1905, pp. 11, 49, 393: ÒIn the year 1631 the ship Lyon, William Pierce, master, left the shores of England with the first batch of Nazing pilgrims on board.  Eliot, the apostle, was there, with William Curtis and Sarah, his wife, EliotÕs sister and their children, in company with the wife of Governor Winthrop...  Early in 1633, John Graves, with his wife and five children, left their home for the shores of New England...  emigration from Old to New England ceased about 1640, when the popular cause there began to look hopeful.Ó

ÒWest of Stony Brook and south of Heath Street, a district since included in the Lowell and Heath estates, originally contained the homesteads of Philip Eliot, James Astwood, Isaac Johnson, Robert Pepper, John Graves, Arthur Gary, John Perry, and William Heath.Ó  (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3)

[1]According to R-2, she was Mary Savage.

[2]John Graves was a friend of John Eliot the Apostle, coming as did Eliot, from the town of Nasing, in Essex, and living in Roxbury.  He died in 1644.

[3]This provision for one of the daughters of John Graves may account for the omission of her name in his will, made Nov. 1, 1644, by which his estate was left to his wife, mother, and children, except Sarah.  Perhaps she was the only surviving child by a second wife (daughter of Thomas Finch), who died shortly after his arrival in New England, or of Judith Alward, or Allard, his third wife.)

[4] Data for children from ÒMassachusetts Vital Records to 1850Ó, New England Historic Genealogical Society.

[5] According to R‑13, Thomas was born 18 Nov. 1678 and died 15 Sept. 1756.

[6]There seems to be some confusion about places.  R-2 shows all children born at Sturbridge, MA, with the possible exception of Daniel, Martha and Miriam, whose places of birth are unknown.
