GENERATION 1

 

Peter Kilts Graves (1) was born 13 Jan. 1807 in NY state, and died 3 March 1868 in Muskego, Waukesha Co., WI.  He married Lucy An Shear (note only one ÒnÓ in her middle name), daughter of (John) Smith Shear and Polly Martha Handy, on 2 Jan. 1834.  She was born 3 March 1819 (or 1818), and died 9 Oct. 1889 in Muskego, WI.  They were both buried in Rural Home Cem., Big Bend, WI.  Information on Peter, Lucy, and their children is from the Graves-Hotelling-Sorenson family Bible[1].

The parents of Peter Kilts Graves may be William Graves and Catherine (or Catharine) Kilts. Catherine was born in 1786 in Manheim, Herkimer Co., NY, and died in 1860 in Muskego, Waukesha Co., WI.  She was a daughter of Petrus P. Kilts and Margaretha Jost Leipe, members of the Dutch Reformed Church.  William Graves probably married Catherine about 1805 and died in 1811. Catharine Graves was listed as head of household in the 1830 census for Manheim, NY.  She was in the 1850 census for Muskego, WI, living with her daughter ElizabethÕs family.  (R‑1)

William Joseph Graves (4) was born 28 Aug. 1838 (or 1839) in Clinton Co., NY, and died 31 March 1906 in Brunswick, Kanabec Co., MN.  He married Mary Jane Hart, daughter of Frank Hart dit Jolicoeur and Zoa Louisa Marie LeDuc, on 18 March 1859 in Muskego, Waukesha Co., WI.  She was born in June 1839 in Canada, and died in 1920 in MN.  They moved from WI to MN and lived in Kanabec Co., MN.

They were in the 1875 Minnesota State Census in Kanabec Co.  They were in the 1880 census for Kanabec Co., MN, with children William, 16, Agnis, 14, Algi, 11, Frankie, 5, Louis, 3, and John, 1.  They were in the 1900 census for Brunswick, Kanabec Co., MN, with 8 of her 12 children still living, sons Arthur, b. Oct. 1882, son George, b. Dec. 1886, and grandchild Della, b. July 1887 living with them.  They were in the 1905 Minnesota state census in Kanabec Co.  (R‑2, R‑3, R‑5)

Alexander (ÒAlexÓ) Hamilton Graves (6) was born 5 Sept. 1842 in Point Peninsula, Jefferson Co., NY, and died 14 June 1912 in Los Angeles Co., CA.  He married Jane (ÒJennieÓ) Ann Tallman, daughter of Ephraim Stephen Tallman, on 21 Nov. 1875 in Brunswick, Kanabec Co., MN.  She was born 16 Nov. 1853 in Mora, Kanabec Co., MN (or Stillwater, Washington Co., MN), and died 11 Aug. 1932 in Monroe, Snohomish Co., WA.  She had previously married James Nester, and had 1 child by him, Luella Maud Nester, b. 1871.  She married Albert B. Robinson in Aug. 1907 in Raymond, Pacific Co., WA.

They were in the 1900 census for Inyo Co., CA, all 6 of her children still living, with children Letta E., b. March 1884, and Sylvia E, b. Oct. 1887, and granddaughter Gladys Stillman, b. Sept. 1894.  (R‑5, R‑6)

Lucy Agnes (or An) Graves (12) was born 5 Aug. 1859 in Muskego, Waukesha Co., WI, and died 14 May 1940 in New Berlin, Waukesha Co., WI.  She married Stephen (or Steven) Joseph Hotelling, son of Stephen Joseph Hotelling and Malinda Aldeich, on 5 Sept. 1875 in Waukesha, WI, ceremony performed by Rev. A. T. Burnell.  He was born 20 Sept. 1852 in Columbus Co., WI, and died 8 Feb. 1937 in New Berlin, WI.  They were both buried in Sunnyside Cem., New Berlin, WI.  Their first 3 children were born in New Berlin, the fourth in Vernon, the next two in Muskego, and the last 5 in Vernon, all in Waukesha Co., WI.  (R‑1)

William Henry Graves (16) was born 9 Jan. 1864 in WI, and died 29 July 1922 in Kanabec Co., MN.  He first married Clarissa Davidson on 15 Sept. 1883 in Isanti Co., MN.  They apparently had no children.  He married second Augusta Dorothea Johnson on 26 Oct. 1889.  She was born 1 July 1869 in Enkullen, Vastermorrland, Sweden, and died 18 May 1917 in Brunswick, Kanabec Co., MN.  They were in the 1900 census for Brunswick, Kanabec Co., MN, living next to his parents, 5 of their 7 children living, all still at home, all born in MN.  They were in the 1905 Minnesota state census in Kanabec Co., still next to his parents.  They were in the 1910 census for Brunswick, MN.  (R‑2, R‑5)

Graves (22) was born in June 1876 in MN, and died 3 Sept. 1901 in Mora (or Brunswick), Kanabec Co., MN.  He married Mary Hockinson (or Hokanson), daughter of Eric Peter Hokanson and Anna Elizabeth Ivarsdotter Naslund, on 22 April 1897 in Kanabec Co., MN.  She was born 19 Aug. 1876 in Brunswick, Kanabec Co., MN, and died 6 Feb. 1958 in St. Louis Co., MN.  After Lewis died, she married Per Algot Lidholm in 1907, and had another daughter.  (R‑2, R‑5, R‑7)

Arthur Robert Graves (24) was born about 1881 in Brunswick, MN, died 30 Nov. 1918 in Ashland, Ashland Co., WI, and was buried 4 Dec. 1918 in Cambridge, Isanti Co., MN.  He married Anna Victoria Anderson, daughter of Stur Pehr Anderson and Anna Christine Olene.  She was born 17 April 1885 in Cambridge, MN, died 17 Dec. 1960 in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN, and was buried 19 Dec. 1960 in Lutheran Cem., Cambridge, MN.  Both their children were born in Minneapolis.  (R‑2)

Roy Edward Hotelling (37) was born 24 Sept. 1886 in New Berlin, WI.  He married Eva Lugena Mohr on 19 May 1906 in Racine, WI.  She was born 18 June 1888 in Racine, WI, and died 1 Dec. 1957 in Waukesha, WI.  The children were all living in Muskego, WI in 1971.  The first child was born in Racine, WI, the next 4 in Chicago, IL, the next in Kenosha, WI, and the last in Winthrop Harbor, IL.  (R‑1)

Graves (50) was born about 1904 in MN, and died in 1981.  He married Hilda ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1926.  She was born about 1906 in Finland.  He was in the 1920 census for Duluth, St. Louis Co., MN, living with the family of his sister Olive, and working as a delivery boy for a retail drug store.  Leslie and Hilda were in the 1930 census for Chicago, Cook Co., IL, with two children Leslie and Garwood, when he was an elevator operator in a packing house.  They were in the 1940 census for Chicago, IL, with the same 2 children.

Claude Joseph Graves (56) was born 21 Aug. 1897 in Kanabec Co., MN, and died 19 May 1969 in Hibbing, St. Louis Co., MN.  He married Muriel F. Green.  She was born about 1898 in MN.  (R‑7)

Clifford Emil Graves (57) was born 11 March 1899 in MN, and died 13 Feb. 1991 in Sun City, Maricopa Co., AZ.  He married Bertha M. Remick, daughter of Joseph Remick and Selina ‑‑‑‑‑‑, on 5 April 1920 in Hibbing, MN.  She was born in Aug. 1899 in MN, and died 4 June 1958 in Harrison Hot Springs, BC, Canada.  Clifford was a vice-president at Greyhound.  Retired to Sun City, AZ.  He had family in California.  (R‑2, R‑7)

Robert Arthur Graves (59) was born 16 Nov. 1912 and died 5 Dec. 1965, both in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN.  He married Alberta Thompson, daughter of Louis Thompson.  She died in Minneapolis, MN.  His occupation was realtor.  They lived in Minneapolis and Acapulco, Mexico.  (R‑2)
