DESCENDANTS OF JOHN DOUGLAS GRAVES AND MARY MAGDALENE ZEIGLER OF GA & AL

GENERATION 1

John Douglas Graves (1) was born about 1800 in GA, and died 20 Feb. 1863 in Autauga Co., AL. He married Mary Magdalene Zeigler2 (or Ziegler), daughter of John Jacob Zeigler and Katherine Speigner, about 1819 in Autauga Co., AL. She was born 1793-99 in SC, and died about 1855 in Elmore Co., AL. All their children were apparently born in Autauga Co., AL.

John secondly married[1] Emily Susan Betsell on 31 May 1857 in Autauga Co., AL. She was born about 1816 in VA. In Autauga Co., AL Deeds Book DH, pp. 16, 17, is a prenuptual agreement between John D. Graves and Emily Susan, stipulating how she can use John’s property if he dies first, and what she will inherit. Witnessed by William Zeigler and John J. Zeigler, 28 May 1857.

John Douglas Graves is almost certainly a son of John W. Graves and Sarah Warren of genealogy 150, based partly on Y-DNA test results. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3, R‑4)

Nancy Elizabeth Graves (2), also known as Elizabeth Ann Graves[4], was born 4 Oct. 18207 in Autauga Co., AL, and died in 1887. She married John S. Goree, son of Ephriam Goree and Celia (or Selah) Goree[5], on 5 April 1838[6] in Autauga Co., AL (her age 17, his age 26). He was born 15 Oct. 1811 [7] in Newberry Dist., SC, and died 6 June 1877 in Robinson Springs, Elmore Co., AL. All their children were born in AL, at least the first 3 in Robinson Springs. (R‑1)

They were in the 1860 census for Lowndes Co., AL. They were in the 1880 census for Steep Creek, Lowndes Co., AL. She was in the 1910 census for Steep Creek, AL, widowed and living with the family of her daughter Ida. All their children were born in Lowndes Co., AL. (R‑2, R‑6)

He secondly married Sara (or Sarah) Jane Strock, daughter of John D. Strock and Ann Livingston of Autauga Co., on 14 Nov. 1869 in Elmore Co., AL. Thornshill, on 9 Jan. 1868 in AL (her age 21, his age 19). He was born 15 Aug. 1848 in NC, and died 23 Jan. 1892. They were both buried in Robinson Springs Cem., Elmore Co., AL. He was a farmer. He married Celena Emerline Strock, daughter of John Daniel Strock and Ann Catherins (or Catherine?) Livingston, on 23 Nov. 1871 in Elmore Co., AL. She was born 17 Nov. 1846 in Autauga Co., AL, and died 16 July 1902 in Elmore Co., AL. They were both buried in Ebenezer Methodist Church Cem.,Speigner, Elmore Co., AL. She was born 11 May 1877 in Rollins, and died 7 Dec. 1931 in Deatsville, both in Autauga Co., AL. All their children were born in AL, probably all in Autauga Co. (R‑4)

He was born 2 Jan. 1870, died 31 Oct. 1925, and was buried in Greenwood Cem., all in Montgomery, AL. All their children were born at home in Montgomery, AL (not certain that Julia was born at home), except for Ernest who was born in Speigner, Elmore Co., AL. (R‑1)
