DESCENDANTS OF PARENTS OF PHINEAS GRAVES AND ANNA KENDALL

OF VT, NY & IL

GENERATION 1

‑‑‑‑‑‑ Graves (1) married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  The names of the brothers of Phineas, Amos and Jesse, are given in the Kane Co. Biographical Record, S. Clark Publishing Co., Chicago, IL, 1898, p. 253.  Other probable brothers are Daniel T. Graves and Orrin Graves, who were living very close to Phineas Graves in the 1840 census for DuPage Co., IL.  In that census, Jesse was listed as 40-50, as was Phineas (since Phineas was born about 1800, Jesse may have been slightly older).  Amos was not listed.  Daniel was age 30-40, as was Orrin.

In searching extensively for the ancestry of this family, it appears most likely that the descent is from Thomas Graves of Hartford, CT and Hatfield, MA (gen. 168).  That is the only family that used all the names of the likely brothers (the name Orrin is only found in the descendants of Thomas Graves in VT), and the places of residence were also found.  However, the family of Samuel Graves of Lynn, MA (gen. 83) is the only one to use the name Adoniram Judson Graves, one of the sons of Phineas and Anna.  No specific connection has yet been found.

Another strong possibility for the father is Reuben Graves, born 22 Nov. 1763.  This is no. 278 on page 40 of the Rear Admiral Thomas Graves of Charlestown, MA book.  (R‑1)

Children - Graves

  2.  Reuben Graves, b.c. 1785.  Listed in the household of Smith R. Tarr and Ruth Ann (Graves) Tarr in the 1870 census.

  3.  Amos Graves; he was probably older than Jesse and Phineas since he was listed separately in the 1810 Truxton, VT census, and had already been baptized in 1811.

+4.  Jesse Graves, b.c. 1798 (VT), m. Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.

+5.  Phineas Graves, b.c. 1800, m. Anna Kendall, d. 24 Dec. 1889.

+6.  Orrin W. Graves, b.c. 1802-1805, m. Achsah ‑‑‑‑‑‑.

+7.  Daniel T. Graves, b.c. 1803, m. Electa D. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. by 1860.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF ‑‑‑‑‑‑ GRAVES (1)

Jesse Graves (4) was born about 1798 in VT.  He married Elizabeth (or Eliza) ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1807 in NY.  The 1840 census for DuPage Co., IL, page 51, showed him with 1 son and 3 daughters.  The 1860 census for Winfield Twp., DuPage Co., IL showed him as age 62, born in VT, and wife Eliza, age 53, born in NY.  He was in his daughter Mary Ann's household in the 1870 census for West Creek Twp., Lake Co., IN.  (R‑1)

Children - Graves

  8.  son, b. 1820-1825.

+9.  Sylvina Graves, b. 1820-1825, m. David Root, 21 Nov. 1841, d.c. 1846.

  10.  daughter, b. 1825-1830.

+11.  Mary Ann Graves, b.c. 1832, m(1) Charles Taylor, m(2) Harling Gregg.

Phineas Graves (5) was born about 1800[1] in VT (according to census records), and died 24 Dec. 1889 in Aurora, IL, in his 90th year.  His parents were born in Massachusetts according to the 1880 census.  He probably moved to NY when a young boy.  He married Anna Kendall, daughter of Luke Kendall (b. NY) and Anna Wilder (b. MA), in NY.  She was born 13 Dec. 1804[2] in Dummerston, VT, and died 8 Feb. 1887 in Aurora, IL.  They were both buried in the West Side Cemetery, where a large monument marks their graves.

According to the Kane Co. (IL) Biographical Record, S. Clark Publishing Co., Chicago, IL, 1898, page 253, "By occupation he was a farmer, and with that laudable desire to better himself he determined to come west.  Accordingly on the 10th of Feb. 1834, with his family, accompanied by his brothers, Amos and Jesse, he left his old home and drove through with teams, being 31 days on the road.  He first located in Will Co., three miles from the present village of Lockport, where he bought a claim, on which there was a log house, and which had 8 or 10 acres broken.  This was known as canal land.  Three years later he sold out and moved to Du Page Co., located near Warrensville, taking up a claim of 160 acres, which he improved and made one of the finest farms in the county.

He later sold that farm and purchased another in the same township, where he resided a number of years and reared his family.  He subsequently sold the farm, and moved to Aurora …"

Phineas Graves was listed in the 1840 census of Winfield, Du Page Co., IL, with 6 males under 30 and 5 females under 20, a total of 11 possible children.  Phineas Graves apparently had 2 brothers that moved to IL about the same time.  In 1840 their properties were located next to each other in Du Page Co., IL, Orrin W. Graves b. 1800-1810 and Jesse Graves b. 1790-1810.

The 1850 census for Winfield, DuPage Co., IL, page 48, listed Phinehas Graves, 50, Ann, 45, Adison, 17, James D., 14, Sophia, 12, Nelson I., 10, Martha, 7, Emma M., 4.  Living next door was the family of his son, Amos C. Graves.  Phineas was in the 1870 census for Winfield, DuPage Co., IL, Warrensville P.O., page 535, with Phineas, 70, Anna, 65, and son Adoniram, 30.  Living in the same household in 1870 were Samuel Wright, 29, Emma (daughter of Phineas), 24, and Geneveve, 2.  Phineas Graves was listed in the 1880 census of Du Page Co., IL, page 49 (or 253A), as age 80, head of household, farmer, b. VT, both parents born in Massachusetts.  In his household were wife Anna, 75, b. VT, parents born NY and MA; son A. Judson, 40, b. IL; Harry Bartholomew, 27, hired man, b. IL, both parents born NY, and his wife Esther Bartholomew, 22, servant, b. IL, both her parents born England.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 3

CHILDREN OF JESSE GRAVES (4) AND ELIZABETH ------

Sylvina Graves (9) was born 1820-1825.  She married David Root, son of Ephraim Root and Vashti Birge, on 21 Nov. 1841 in DuPage Co., IL[3].  He was born 3 Nov. 1815 in Piermont, NH.  He married second Mariette ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  David was a farmer.  The 1850 census for District 97, Rush Co., IN, page 390, lists Ephraim Root (David’s father), 69, David Root, 33, Mariette (David’s 2nd wife), Emma J., 7, Edwin J., 5, Sylvina, 2, David, 1.  It is not known for sure which of the children were by Sylvina and which were by the second marriage, since the date of the second marriage has not yet been found.  Other children born later to David and Mariette are Elizabeth Root, b.c. 1850, John Root, b.c. 1852, Elinor Root, b.c. 1854, William Root, b.c. 1856, and Margaret Root, b.c. 1860.

The parents of Sylvina were not previously known.  However, it was known that she lived in and was married in DuPage Co., IL.  In 1840 there were only 5 Graves families in DuPage Co., IL, and Jesse was the only one who had a daughter of the right age who was not already identified.  It is interesting to note that Jesse’s brother, Daniel, also named a daughter Sylvina, not a common name.  Perhaps the mother of Jesse and Daniel was named Sylvina.  (R‑3)

  34.  Emma J. Root, b.c. 1842.

Stolp, 28, clothier, in the household of his parents, John Stolp, 50, and Lydia, 48.  It seems somewhat strange that Orlando would be living with his parents in 1850 when the 1860 census shows that he and Betsy had a daughter Lydia born about 1849.  One possibility is that they married right after the 1850 census and their daughter was actually born in late 1850.  The 1860 census for Hopkins, Whiteside Co., IL, Empire P.O., page 828, listed O. C. Stolp, 37, clothier, Betsy F., 30, and their first 3 children.  They were in the 1870 census for Locust Creek, Linn Co., MO, Linneus P.O., page 346, with Orlando listed as weaver and spinner.  All their children were born in IL.

Valette, 29, Ellen S., 22, and Walter S., 6 months.  They were in the 1870 census for Naperville, DuPage Co., IL, page 501.  They were in the 1880 census for Naperville, DuPage Co., IL, page 333B.  He was a surveyor.
