DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVES AND MARY ------

OF CHESTERFIELD CO., VA

GENERATION 1

John Graves (1) was born about 1750 in Chesterfield Co., VA, and died about 1798.  He was a planter.  He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1772.  She was born about 1760 and died about 1805.  All their children were apparently born in VA.

There is at least one part of the descendants of Capt. Thomas Graves of VA that lived in Chesterfield Co., VA.  William4 Graves (William3, Thomas2, Thomas1) was baptized 29 April 1688 in St. Peter’s Church, Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co., VA.  He married Martha ‑‑‑‑‑‑ and they settled in Chesterfield Co., VA.  The only son who is known is William5 Graves, born 4 July 1725 in Chesterfield Co., VA, died 24 Jan. 1776, who married Sarah Cox.  Their children were: King, Arthur, Charles, Martha Winifred, Frances, William, Henry, Pliny, Matthew, Sarah, and Benjamin.  This family may be related to that of this John Graves of Chesterfield Co.

Edmund4 Graves, brother of William4 Graves, had a son John5 who had a son Esom6 Graves, b.c. 1764, probably in Halifax Co., VA.  Is it possible that the name Esom was a variation of Isham?

It is believed by some that this John Graves was descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA (genealogy 169) via Thomas1, Thomas2, William3, Edmund4 (b. 1709), John5 (b.c. 1735).  Many of the dates (especially birthdates) given by some sources for this John Graves and his children differ from what is shown in this genealogy.  For example, R‑2 gives the birthdate of John as bout 1732, and the birthdates of his children as 1755-1771.  It is not known for sure which dates arre correct, and documentation for the correct dates is needed.

The birth dates of the following children may not be correct.  References R‑2 and R‑3 give mostly earlier dates, but proof of the dates has not yet been found.  (R‑1)

The siblings of Eleanor Perdue were Peter, John, Francis, Thomas, Daniel, Bartholomew, Littlebury, Sukey, Nancy, Polly, and Lucy.  It is likely that at least Ezekiel, Littlebury and Daniel in the following list of children were named for her side of the family.  All the children of Isham and Eleanor were born in Chesterfield Co., VA.  (R‑1)

Lee, 14, Mary V. Lee, 12, both wards (possibly grandchildren), and Mary Johnson, 45, widowed sister.  Ezekiel and Sarah were in the 1870 census for Lake Providence, Carroll Parish, LA, with Mary Johnson, 58, and George Graves, 27, living with them.  In 1870, Ezekiel was a butcher.  All their children were born in LA.

After William died, Susannah secondly married R. C. Allen on 3 Feb. 1853 and had 3 children.

The first 4 children listed below were born in KY, and the others were born in Pittsfield, Pike Co., IL.  (It has not been absolutely proven that this William Graves is the one who was a son of Isham Graves, but much circumstantial evidence indicates that.)  (R‑1)
