CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (4)
AND ELIZABETH GRAHAM
Benjamin Graves (9) was born about
1859 or 1860 in Coniston, Lancashire (now Cumbria), England. He married Jane Wharton. She was born about 1858 in Ulverston,
Lancashire. They lived in
Lancashire, England. They were in
the 1901 census for Adlington, Lancashire, with all their children. They were in the 1911 census for 53
Chorley Road, Heath Charnock, Lancashire, with only the 4 younger children
still at home. He worked as a coal
miner.
Benjamin was listed as born 1860 in
both the 1901 and 1911 censuses, and the name was spelled Greaves. He has not been found in the 1891
census, although there is a Benjamin Greaves, born 1858 in Coniston, pork
butcher, married to Ann, with daughter Anne, 11, in the 1891 census for
Oswaldtwistle, Lancs. The 1881
census for Church Coniston, Lancs., listed Benjamin Grave, born 1860 in
Coniston, slate carter, living with his widowed mother Elizabeth, landowner,
born about 1815 in Coniston. The
1881 census for Accrington, Lancs., lists George Greaves, butcher, born about
1829 in Hawkshead, Lancs., with wife Martha, and children including Benjamin
Greaves, born about 1857 in Coniston.
It is clear that there were two men born close to the same time in
Coniston, and the one of this genealogy is the son of Elizabeth.
The 1871 census for Church
Coniston, Lancs., lists William Graves, born about 1814 in Oxenfell, Lancs.,
his wife Elizabeth, b.c. 1815 in Coniston, and son Benjamin, b.c. 1860 in
Coniston. The 1861 census for
Church Coniston, Lancs., lists William Grave and Elizabeth with children
Elizabeth, born about 1856, and Benjamin, born about 1859, all family members
born in Hawkshead, Lancs.
Coniston is a village and civil
parish in the Furness region of Cumbria (formerly Lancashire), England. It is
located in the southern part of the Lake District National Park, between
Coniston Water, the third longest lake in the Lake District, and Coniston Old
Man; about 18 miles north east of Barrow-in-Furness. Coniston is situated
within the boundaries of the historic county of Lancashire. Today Coniston
forms part of the administrative county of Cumbria. (R‑1)
