DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD GRAVES AND MARY DONNELL OF MEMPHIS, TN, AND ALAMANCE AND GUILFORD COS., NC

GENERATION 1

Edward Graves (1) was born in Oct. 1857[1] in Memphis, TN, and died before 1920.  He first married Mary Donnell.  She was born in Dec. 1861 in NC.  It is possible that she was the one in the 1870 census for Gilmer Twp., Guilford Co., NC, age 3, in the household of Henry and Kate Witherspoon, living next to Yancey Donnell, but the ages donÕt agree.  They were in the 1900 census for Gilmer, Guilford Co., NC, when all 4 of their children were still living, and he was a Baptist clergyman.

Edward married second Eliza ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about Dec. 1909.  She was born about 1877 in NC.  This was her second marriage also.  She had first married Mr. Davis, and 3 of her 4 children by that marriage were still living in 1910.  They were in the 1910 census for Greensboro, Guilford Co., NC, and he was listed as Minister of the Gospel.  Edward has not been found in any other censuses.  Edward died by 1920, since his widow Eliza was in the 1920 census for Greensboro, NC, with her unmarried son Bynum Graves (formerly Davis), age 25, living with her.  All EdwardÕs children were born in NC.

Living nearby in 1910 was widow Mary Moffitt with her children, including daughter Elsie who married EdwardÕs son John.
