DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND MARY SHAVER OF SC, GA & AL

GENERATION 1

William Graves (1) was born about 1755 and died 24 Feb. 1836[1].  He married Mary Shaver about 1796.  She was born 22 Feb. 1779 in SC, and died in Aug. 1851.  He may have been a Revolutionary War soldier, although this may have been the other William Graves in genealogy 220, mentioned in the paragraph.  He was living in SC in 1793 when his first child was born.  Henry Shaver, his father-in-law, moved his large family from Lancaster Co., SC to the Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA area.  By 1817 they had moved and settled in Montgomery Co., AL.  William Graves settled on land in the same area in Alabama as the Henry Shaver family.  His brother-in-law was James Shaver, born 1802.

It is interesting to note that the birth and death dates for this William Graves are the same as for the William Graves who married Sarah Smith (shown in genealogy 220 for Francis Graves).  Obviously they have different wives and children and are two separate people, but moved to the same area of Alabama.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1) AND MARY SHAVER

John Kirk Graves (2) was born about 1793 in SC.  He married Celia Ann Jones of Montgomery Co., AL on 24 Dec. 1826[2].  She was born about 1808 in GA.

John K. Graves was an heir and the administrator of the estate of Mary Graves, a widow.  (Will Book B, pages 25, 26, 27, dated 20 April 1853.  Alabama State Archives, Montgomery, AL.)  John, Celia, and their children were living in Nixburg, Coosa Co., AL about 1830.  The 1850 Coosa Co. census shows John K., 57, Celia, 42, William, 19, Martha, 13.  By 1852 they had moved to Leake Co., MS and called their community Coosa.  It appears that they were the first to be buried in what became known as the Graves family cemetery in Leake Co.  The graves were unmarked for more than one hundred years, but handed down sketches of the layout of the cemetery and indentations in the soil showed where each one was buried.  Although all documents show “John K.”, it is likely that the initial “K” was for Kirk, since John Kirk was the name given to his grandson.  (R‑1)

After Elizabeth died, William married second Narcissa Barnes in 1898.  He was 63 at the time, and she was 52.  She was also buried in the Graves family cemetery in Leake Co., MS.  (R‑1)
