In the Nottingham Post, Friday, July 5, 2013, was the following article on page 32 in the Bygones section titled ÒTestament to the futility of warÓ.

ÒOn one side of a shallow valley in the Flanders region of Belgium stands the huge military cemetery called Tyne Cot.  On the opposite ridge is the village of Passchendaele.

On those gentle slopes more than 750,000 allied soldiers, including thousands from Notts and Derbyshire, were killed or wounded.

It was at Passchendaele that Corporal Fred Greaves of the 9th Battalion Sherwood Foresters won his Victoria Cross.

The third Battle of Ypres was raging as British and Commonwealth forces fought to capture the small but strategically important Belgian village.

The Foresters were pinned down, their officers dead, under murderous fire from a German machine-gun post, until Corporal Greaves, a miner from Killamarsh, stormed the enemy position and killed or captured the garrison.

Later that day, he rallied his platoon to foil a German advance.  His reward was the VC.

More than 90 years after the slaughter of Passchendaele, the name lives on as a symbol of the horror of the First World War.

Slaughter on the Western Front had been raging for three years when Allied high command came up with their latest scheme for victory.  Capture Passchendaele, near the battered town of Ypres, and drive a hole through the German lines.

It was not a good place to fight an infantry war.  The terrain was marshland, swollen by heavy rain and churned into a morass of mud by British artillery.

Soldiers walked from trench to trench on duckboards.  If anyone slipped into a water-filled shellhole, likely as not he would drown.  How many men perished in that way, no one will ever know.

The Foresters put 12 battallions into action, more than 12,000 men.  At the end of the battle, 1.741 were dead and 3,223 wounded.

When the Germans launched a spring offensive in 1918, there werenÕt enough soldiers left to turn them back.

They retook every trench, every shellhole, every shattered building, that had cost nearly half a million casualties to win only five months earlier.

If there ever was a testament to the futility of war, Passchendaele was it.Ó
