GENERATION 1

Elizabeth Graves (1) may have been Elizabeth Graves-Grosvener of Bristol, England. She is said to have been born about 1691-1697, and died about 1729 in Bremo, Henrico Co., VA. She married Edward Randolph in 1717 or 1718. Edward was born about 1695 or 1697 in Turkey Island, Henrico Co., VA, lived in Bremo, Henrico Co., VA, and died about 1756 in VA. His parents were Col. William Randolph, born Oct. 1651 in Yorkshire, England, and Mary Isham, born 1660 in Bermuda Hundred, Henrico Co., VA. William Randolph emigrated from England in 1669. William Randolph's parents were Richard and Elizabeth Ryland Randolph and his grandfather was William Randolph of Sussex, England.

"Edward lived in England and was Captain of a ship captivated at a launch at Gravesend. Miss Graves, an heiress of 10,000 whom he married. Older member of family, contemporary with his grandmother who was a granddaughter of Mrs. Randolph said Grosvener Square (in London) was associated with Mrs. Randolph's name, and an old aunt, a childless widow and the repository of all family tradition and heirlooms, and an almost daily companion for 50 years, urged the giving of this name Grosvener to the writer's (Bishop Meade) youngest brother to preserve it in family history. She always spoke of Mrs. Randolph as an heiress, and either a Quakeress or of Quaker sympathies and so much opposed to negro slaves that she never came to Virginia."

Most submitted genealogies on Ancestry.com show Elizabeth Graves as born about 1691 or 1697 in Turkey Island, VA, daughter of John Graves and Susannah Dicken of genealogy 169 (descended from Capt. Thomas Graves of VA). However, this is not possible, since that John Graves was born 1706, married in Nov. 1732, and his children were born 1733-1746. (R‑1, R‑2, R‑3)

William Yates, son of Bartholomew Yates and Sarah Stanard, on 27 March 1745 in Ware, Cloucester Co., VA. He was born 10 Dec. 1720 in Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA, and died 5 Oct. 1764 in Williamsburg, James Co., VA. He was president of William and Mary College.
