DESCENDANTS OF HIRAM GRAVES, CATHERINE ------, AND ANNIE JOHNSON OF NY

GENERATION 1

Hiram Graves (1) was born 19 July 1785 in NY, and died in 1865 in Otsego Co., NY. He first married Annie Johnson. She was born 19 May 1791, and died in 1841[1] in Otsego Co., NY. He married second Catherine (“Caty”) ‑‑‑‑‑‑ before 1850. She was born about 1812 and died in 1885.

Hiram was in the 1820 census for Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY. He was in the 1830 census for Middlefield, Otsego Co., NY. He was in the 1840 census for Westford, Otsego Co., NY. He was in the 1850 census for Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY. He was in the 1860 census for Laurens, Otsego Co., NY. He was a carpenter.

Some people have believed that Hiram was a son of the Abraham Graves, born 1737 in North Guilford, CT, who married Catherine Hall and was descended from immigrant Deacon George Graves of Hartford, CT (genealogy 65). This appears possible but unlikely. The 1790 census for Guilford, CT shows no males under 16 in the household of Abraham Grave, although Hiram should have been there. Also, Hiram was supposedly born 19 July 1785 in NY, but the 1840, 1850 and 1860 censuses all indicate he was born about 1790, and the 1860 census says he was born in MA. (R‑1)

Nathan Graves (4) was born 12 March 1813 in Harpersfield, Delaware Co., NY, and died 19 June 1886 in Oneonta, Otsego Co., NY. He married Catherine Ann Brewer, daughter of John Brewer and Catherine Couse, on 2 Oct. 1836 in Oneonta, NY. She was born 16 April 1818 and died 12 Oct. 1907, both in Oneonta, NY. All their children were born in Otsego Co., NY, the first in Oneonta, the next in Laurens, the next in Oneonta, and the last 3 in Oneonta. Albert and Edgar were probably also born in Oneonta. (R‑1)

She married Julian Bradford Jackson, son of Fred Marshall Henry (“FMH”) Jackson and Alta Louisa Price, on 1 Dec. 1914 in Jersey City, NJ. He was born 18 Aug. 1895 in Oneonta, NY, and died 7 March 1962 in Venice, FL. All their children were born in Oneonta, NY, except for Margaret who was born in Albany, NY. (R‑1)

[1] It appears that Annie may have died earlier than 1841, since her last child was born in 1833, and the 1840 census showed his wife was 20-30, the age of Catherine, not Annie.
