DESCENDANTS OF JAMES GREVES AND ELIZABETH ------ OF SCOTLAND & ALLEGHENY CO., PA

GENERATION 1

James Greves (1) was born about 1765 in Scotland, and may have died by 1840 in PA, since he couldnÕt be found in the 1840 census.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born in Scotland, and probably died by 1830 in PA, since she wasnÕt in the 1830 census with her husband.

James was in the 1800, 1810 and 1820 censuses for Mifflin Twp., Allegheny Co., PA[1].  He was listed as James Grievs in 1800, James Graves in 1810, and James Greves in 1820.  James was in the 1830 census for Slippery Rock Twp., Mercer Co., PA, with 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20 (probably son Peter), 1 male 60-70 (himself), 1 female 10-15, and 1 female 20-30 (1 or his daughters).  The 1880 census for their son Peter indicated that both James and his wife were born in Scotland.  (R‑2)

Boyer, b.c. 1838, and Joseph Boyer, b.c. 1843.

The family was in the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses for Stark Co., OH.  The 1850 census for Osnaburg, Stark Co., OH listed a John Greaves and wife Sarah with a Martha Clinefelter living with the family.  Most of the Clinefelters are buried in the Reformed Cemetery in Waynesburg, Stark Co., OH.  The Clinefelter family was probably of German ancestry and belonged to the Reformed Lutheran Church.  (R‑1, R‑2)

ÒWalter (grandson of Austin and Mary Wright) remembers his grandparentsÕ home on Liberty St. next door to 620 Liberty St. where Uncle Cec and Aunt Marie lived, and 620½ where Betty and Chuck Reed live now.  It was to the right, if youÕre facing Uncle CecÕs front door.  There was a pear tree behind his grandparentsÕ home that Walter liked to pick and eat from.  Also Sylvia Mae remembers seeing the black Civil War era captainÕs chair (of great-grampa Isaac Newton WhiteÕs) at Grampa WhiteÕs house.  It was in a little room off the living room, like an office, and the chair was at a desk in there.  Walter now has the chair and will be giving it to Dan and Sara White.  On the other side of Uncle CecÕs house was a very large vegetable garden covering the whole lot, clear to the woods which grew behind all three lots.  Sylvia Mae says that was their vegetable garden which they grew (Baa & DapaÕs).  Behind Uncle CecÕs house the house which Chuck and Betty Reed live in now, was a gunsmith shop.  ThatÕs where Uncle Cec cut off the Springfield rifle, which Dapa gave to Walter, and Walter gave to Dan White.  Grandpa Austin White served in the National Guard and went against the strikers in western Pennsylvania.  He was a marksman.  He would have gone into the Spanish-American War but he withdrew from the Guard before that.  Once a biplane ran out of gas and landed in the field behind the woods (toward Grove City college) (also towards DapaÕs and BaaÕs house where Walter lived about a block from his Grandpa and Grandma White).  Grampa and Grandma White went to the United Presbyterian Church and he worked at Cooper Bessemer in Grove City until he retired.  We have a book he owned, Shepherd of the Hills, at Sylvia MaeÕs house, which is the origin of the Ozarks pageant by that name.Ó  (R‑4)
