DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS GRAVES AND ELIZABETH ------ OF ISLINGTON, MIDDLESEX & CROYDON, SURREY, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Thomas Graves (1) was born about 1803 in Islington, Middlesex, England.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1801 in Lindfield, Sussex.  They were in the 1841, 1851, and 1861 censuses for Croydon, Surrey, living on George Street.  In 1861, a grandson, Edmund Graves, age 5, born in Croydon, was living with them, possibly a son of Henry Graves (since Henry has not been identified in any census records after 1851).  ThomasŐ occupation was given in 1841 as ostler (a person employed at an inn, hostelry, or stable to look after horses), in 1851 as stable keeper, and in 1861 as fly proprietor.  A fly is a one-horse two-wheeled light carriage.  A fly proprietor is a person with funds who makes a living by employing fly drivers and hiring out flys.  At least Eliza and the later children were born in Croydon, but the earlier children may have been born before they moved to Croydon.
