DESCENDANTS OF OWENS C. GRAVES AND MARY ------

OF MS, TX, LA & AR

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

Owens C. (or Oscar or Osceola) Graves (1) was born about 1840[1] in MS, and died after 1910.  He married Winnie or Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1845 in TN.  According to R‑2, he lived in Houston, TX for a while, and raised his family in LA.  He was in the 1870 census for Ward 1, Richland Parish, LA, as Owens C., with wife Winnie, 25, born TN, and 4 children born in TX.  The 1880 census for 1st Ward, Richland Parish, LA, lists O.C., Mary, and 9 children, all listed as mulatto.  Their first 4 children were born in TX and the next 5 in LA.  They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR, when he was listed as Osceola Graves. They were listed as white in 1900 (changed from mulatto) and as black in 1910.  The 1900 census indicated he had 12 children, but it is not clear whether they were all living at that time.  He was widowed as of the 1900 census, which showed him living with 3 of his children, Forest, Walter and Winnie..  The 1910 census showed him married to Adaline ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1898, with a son Ben Graves, age 13, possibly a son by her former marriage.  One of the children was named Rinkins, but it is not known which one.  His first 4 children were born in TX, and the next 7 in LA.  (R‑1, R‑2)

  8. Oscar Graves, b.c. 1874 (or Feb. 1876), m. Hattie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1907.  She was b.c. 1892 in AR.  He was in the 1900 census for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR, living alone next to his brother John.  They were in the 1910 census for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR.

+9. Robert Graves, b. May 1878, m. Annie ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1898.

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF OWENS C. GRAVES (1) AND MARY ------

Archie Graves (2) was born in June 1865 in TX.  He married Nora ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1891.  She was born in Oct. 1874 in AR.  They were in the 1900 and 1920 censuses for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR.  In 1900, 3 of their 5 children were still living.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in AR.

  15.  Bernice (ÒBurnyÓ) Graves, b. March 1900.

John Graves (3) was born in May 1866 in TX.  He married Lula ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1894.  She was born in Oct. 1878 in AR.  They were in the 1900 census for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR, when all 3 of their children were living.  They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR.  He was a farmer.  In 1920, the name of his wife was given as Louise or Louisa, and it is not known whether this was a second wife.  All the children were born in AR.

  17.  Minnie Graves, b. March 1895.

  18.  Wesley (or Hansel P.) Graves, b. Sept. 1896 (or c. 1898).  It is not clear whether these are 2 different children.  The 1900 census listed Hansel P., b. Sept. 1896, but not Wesley, and the 1910 and 1920 censuses listed Wesley, b.c. 1898, but not Hansel.

  20.  Fluker Graves, b.c. 1900.

  21.  George Graves, b.c. 1905.

  23.  Louise (or Lena) Graves, b.c. 1913.

 

William Hiram Graves (5) was born about 1869 in TX[2].  He married Mary Stewart, daughter of William Stewart and Eugenia ‑‑‑‑‑‑, about 1898 or 1899.  His age at the time of the marriage was 30 or 31.  She was born in 1876.  They were in the 1900 census for Grant Parish, LA with one child, Elbert.  They were in the 1910 census for Grant Parish, LA.  They were in the 1920 census for Cotile, Rapides Parish, LA.  He was a farmer.  They lived in or around Boyce, Grant Parish, LA.  All their children were born in LA.  (R‑1)

Thomas (ÒTomÓ) Graves (7) was born about 1872 or Jan. 1874 in LA.  He married Ida ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1895.  She was born about 1882 or Oct. 1880 in LA.  They were in the 1900 census for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR, living close to his father.  They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in AR.  (R‑2)

  32.  Floyd Graves, b. March 1897, m. Betha ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1929.  They were in the 1930 census for Richland Twp, Jefferson Co., AR.  He was a cotton farmer.

  33.  Evangeline (or Evangelina or Angeline) Graves, b. Dec. 1898.  Not in the 1920 census.

  34.  Ullysses Graves, b.c. 1902.

Robert (ÒBobÓ) Graves (9) was born in May 1878 in LA.  He married Anna (ÒAnnieÓ or Ann) ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1898.  She was born in July 1882 in AR.  They were in the 1900 and 1920 censuses for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in AR.

Forest (or Forrest) Graves (10) was born in Sept. 1879 (or 1885) in LA.  He married Lucy ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1908.  She was born about 1892 in AR.  They were in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses for Richland Twp., Jefferson Co., AR.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in AR.

[1] His birth date was given as Oct. 1844 in the 1900 census, but the 1880 census indicated about 1835, and the 1870 census indicated about 1840, all in MS.

[2] The 1900 census gave his birth as July 1871 inLA, but that could not be correct since he was listed as age 1, born in TX, in the 1870 census for Richland Parish, LA.
