Rev. 12 Sept. 2008, Gen. 433
DESCENDANTS OF ROBERT GRAVES AND CATHERINE ------ OF CROSTHWAITE, WESTMORLAND & ALDINGHAM, LANCASHIRE, ENGLAND
GENERATION 1
Robert Graves (1) was born about 1795 in Crosthwaite, Westmorland, England, and died after 1861, possibly in Little Urswick, Lancashire. He married Catherine ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1798 in Dalton, Lancashire. In 1974, Westmorland (or Westmoreland) was merged with the neighboring county of Cumberland to form Cumbria.
They were in the 1841 and 1851 censuses for the village of Gleaston, parish of Aldingham, Lancashire. They were in the 1861 census for Little Urswick, Lancashire. He was an iron miner. Sons Thomas and George were both listed as iron miners in 1861. Robert was born in Urswick, and Thomas and George in Aldingham.

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF ROBERT GRAVES (1) AND CATHERINE ------
Robert Graves (2) was born about 1823-1826 in Urswick,
Lancashire. He married Mary Stables,
daughter of Richard Palmer and Ann Stables, on 10 May 1856 in the parish
church, Aldingham, Lancashire. She was
born about 1835 in Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire. It is possible that Mary was illegitimate, so took her mother’s
name, but knew who her father was. The
1851 census showed Mary working as a house servant at 9 Gleaston, Aldingham,
Lancashire, at the age of 16 in the home of John and Mary Leece; John was a
butcher. In the 1861 census, Robert and
Mary were living at 226 Fell Croft, Dalton-in-Furness, Lancs. The 1901 census for Dalton-in-Furness,
Lancs, showed Mary as a widow, age 66, and living with her were 2 sons, George
and James, daughter Sarah, and son-in-law David Colethrup. (R‑1)

12. Sarah Graves, b.c. 1880, m. David Colethrup. He was b.c. 1879.
George Graves (5) was born about 1840 in Aldingham, Lancashire, and may have died by 1871. He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑. He was listed as a grandson in the 1861 census, but that must be an error, since he was almost the same age as Thomas who was listed as a son. His probable marriage and death is based on not finding him in the 1871 or later censuses, and the nephew James Robert Graves living with brother Thomas Graves in 1871 and 1881.
