GENERATION 1

 

Richard Graves (1) was born about 1797, either at sea or in New Brunswick, Canada[1].  He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He married second Elizabeth Belyea on 8 Jan. 1845 in Greenwich Parish, Kings Co., New Brunswick.  They were in the 1851 census for Greenwich, New Brunswick, with two children by his first marriege.  He was a farmer.  Both children were born in New Brunswick.  (R‑1)

+2.  Alexander Graves, b. 20 Nov. 1838, m. Margaret Mullen, d. 3 March 1901.

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF RICHARD GRAVES (1)

Alexander Graves (2) was born 20 Nov. 1838 in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, and died 3 March 1901[2].  He married Margaret Mullen.  She was born 19 June 1843 in New Brunswick, and died before 1900.  He served as a substitute in the 14th Maine Volunteer Regiment in the Civil War, and that gained him and his family U.S. citizenship.  They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Presque Isle, Arroostook Co., ME.  Alexander was a hostler in 1870 and a laborer in 1880.  He was in the 1900 census for Presque Isle, ME, age 63, widower, day laborer.  All his children were born in ME, probably in Presque Isle.  (R‑1, R‑2)

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF ALEXANDER GRAVES (2) AND MARGARET ------

Richard Graves (4) was born about 1867 in Maine, probably Presque Isle.  He married Bessie B. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1887.  She was born about 1870 in Canada.  They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Presque Isle, Aroostook Co., ME.  He was a merchant in 1910 and a town tax collector in 1920.  All their children were born in ME.

Elbridge Graves (6) was born in Dec. 1870 in Presque Isle, ME.  He married Edith M. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1901.  She was born about 1884 in Canada.  They were in the 1910 and 1920 censuses for Presque Isle, Aroostook Co., ME.  He was a potato dealer in 1920.

  15.  Glenwood O. Graves, b.c. 1903 (ME).

 

Stephen Alexander Graves (7) was born 14 June 1873 and died 24 Oct. 1899, both in Presque Isle, ME.  He married Eliza Jane Prosser on 28 Oct. 1896.  She was born in March 1875 in Canada.  Their two children were in the 1900 census for Presque Isle, ME, living with their widowed mother and their grandfather, Alexander Graves.  Both children were born in ME.  (R‑1, R‑2)

+16.  Frances Pearl Graves, b. 12 July 1897, m. Edgar Frederick Callahan, 12 July 1926.

[1] The 1851 census said he was born in New Brunswick, as did the 1880 census for his son Alexander, but the 1900 census for Alexander said his father was born at sea and his mother was born in Scotland.

[2] The death certificate of Alexander lists his father as John, not Richard.  However, the census record giving his father’s name as Richard is considered a more reliable document.
