Rev. 12 April 2008, Gen. 437
DESCENDANTS OF JOHN C.
GRAVES AND RACHEL P. JONES
OF MI & TN
GENERATION 1
John C. Graves (1) was born about
1845 in MI. He married Rachel P. Jones
in Dec. 1875. She was born 16 Sept.
1855 (or 1853[1]), died 25
Jan. 1941, and was buried in Shelton Cem., all in Hamilton Co., TN. Her parents were Benjamin Franklin Jones,
born 28 Sept. 1822 in Hamilton Co., TN, and Elizabeth Ann Ford, born in Dec.
1821 in TN. John and Rachel with their
first 2 children were listed in the 1880 census for District 11, Hamilton Co.,
TN, page 93A. John was listed as 35,
born in MI, farm laborer, with his father born in Ireland and his mother born
in Scotland. John Graves has not been
found with certainty in any census records before 1880. However, the 1870 census for Grand Haven,
Ottawa Co., MI, P.O. Holland, lists a John Graves (or Graver), age 24, born in
England, carpenter, who could be the correct one. If so, perhaps the reason he can’t be found in the 1860 census is
that he hadn’t arrived from England then.
The 1900 census for Dist. 11, Hamilton Co., TN, page 17A, listed Rachel,
widow, with sons Benjamin and James.
She was a farmer, and 4 of her 5 children were still living. All their children were born in TN.
John left the family about the time
Henry was born, so Henry never knew him.
Rachel lived until 1941 but would never talk about John except to say
that he came to Tennessee from Holland, Ottawa Co., MI. (R‑1)
