DESCENDANTS OF HENRY GRAVES AND ROSETTA ------ OF HAYWOOD CO., TN

GENERATION 1

Henry Graves (1) was born about 1835 or 1842 in TN.  He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born in NC, according to the 1880 census.  He seems to have married as his second wife Rosetta (“Rose”) ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1853 in AL, with both her parents born in NC.  She was listed with Henry in both the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

Henry Graves was in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Haywood Co., TN.  His age was given as 28 in 1870 and 45 in 1880.  All his children were born in TN.  He was a farm laborer.  In 1870, there were many other Graves families living nearby, some of which might be related.  He could not be found on any earlier slave censuses with a Graves owner.  The slave owners listed in 1860 in Haywood Co. were Peyton Graves and Lewis Graves (gen. 270, son of Martin Graves), but they didn’t have slaves of the right age to be Henry.  Since Henry was listed as mulatto on the 1870 census, and some of his descendants were also listed that way in later censuses, it is possible that he had white ancestry.  The family that seems most likely to be related is genealogy 281 for Thomas Graves and Mary Bradshaw of Mecklenburg Co., VA.

Edward and Esau seem to definitely be children of the first marriage, and Ella Iola and the younger children are definitely by the second marriage, but it is not certain who the mother of James and Babe were.  Also, there were probably more children after the 1880 census, but these are not presently known.
