Rev. 9 Nov. 2006, Gen. 452

‑‑‑‑‑‑ Greaves (1) married Celia ‑‑‑‑‑‑.She was born in Aug. 1809 in England. She was in the 1900 census for Craftsbury, Orleans Co., VT, living with her son Richard. After an extensive search of census records for England, the only possible match is for a Celia Groves, born about 1804-1807 in Brockhurst or Brockenhurst (both close to Southampton), Hampshire. She was married to John Groves, born about 1802-1805 in Lynmouth, Devonshire, and served in the Coast Guard. They were in the 1841 census for Boldre, Hampshire, the 1851 census for Friston, Susses, and the 1861 census for Seaford, Susses. They could not be found in 1871, but she was listed in the 1881 census for Brighton, Susses, widow, 74, living with her daughter, Hannah Groves. She could not be found in the 1891 or 1901 censuses in England. It is not at all certain that this was the same Celia as later found in the U.S.

Celia apparently remarried, since in the1900 census she was Celia Cass, widow. That census also showed that 6 of her 9 children were still living. The 1851 census listed 5 children for Celia Groves, ages 3-12.If John and Richard were also her children, they would have been about 18 and 21.They would not have been listed in any census records in England, since they emigrated in 1839 and 1840.
