Rev. 14 Sept. 2004, Gen. 457
DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL
GRAVES AND PHEBE ------
OF BRISTOL CO., MA
GENERATION 1
Samuel Graves (1) was probably born
about 1730-1740 (based on his age of 90-100 in the 1830 census). He probably died between 1830 and 1840
(since he was in the 1830 census, but not in the 1840 census). He married Phebe Andrews on 29 Sept. 1791 in
Taunton, Bristol Co., MA[1]. She died 22 Feb. 1832 at age 78 (born about
1754). They apparently lived in Taunton
or Raynham, Bristol Co., MA. The death
of Phebe and the birth and marriages of their two sons was recorded in the
“First Book of Raynham (MA) Records, 1700-1835”, as transcribed to
NewEnglandAncestors.org.
It seems likely that this was
Samuel’s second marriage, and perhaps Phebe’s second marriage also, since she
was about 37 when they married. Their
being older when married may have been the reason they only had two children.
Samuel was not in the 1790 census
(perhaps because he was in the household of someone else). He was in the 1800 census for Raynham,
Bristol Co., MA, page 589, listed as Samuel Graeves, 45 or older, 2 males under
10, and 1 female 45 or older. He was in
the 1810 census for Raynham, Bristol Co., MA, page 357, with 1 male 10-15, 1
male 16-25, 1 male 45+, and 1 female 45+.
He was apparently in the 1820 census for Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, page
263, where he and his wife are probably the people over 45 living with his son
Marcus. He was in the 1830 census for
Raynham, Bristol Co., MA, page 147, 1 male 90-100, and 1 female 70-80.
DNA analysis of a descendant has
shown that this Graves family is descended from immigrant Samuel Graves of
Lynn, MA (genealogy 83), probably via Samuel1, Thomas2,
Samuel3. Although the
specific connection has not yet been proven, it is possible that Samuel was the
one who was a son of Samuel Graves and Hannah Rand. If so, Samuel was born 9 or 6 Aug. 1739, first married Lois
Burrill on 28 April 1768, and married second Elizabeth Burrill on 20 Jan. 1774.

+2. Marcus Graves, b. 19 Dec. 1792, m. Betsey Witherell, 26 March 1812.

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF SAMUEL GRAVES (1)
AND PHEBE ------
Marcus Graves (2) was born 19 Dec.
1792 in MA. He was “of Raynham” when he
married Betsey Witherell of Taunton on 26 March 1812[2]. She was born about 1793 in MA. They were in the 1850 census for Taunton,
Bristol Co., MA, page 237, with all children except George. He was a laborer. All their children were born in MA. It is not proven that George was a child of Marcus, but they
lived close to each other in Taunton in 1850, and the age of George fits very
well. Neither Henry nor Charles Graves
could be found in any New England states in the 1880 census.
Marcus was in the 1820 census for
Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, page 263, with 1 male under 10, 1 male 26-45
(himself), 1 male 45+ (probably his father), 3 females under 10, 1 female
10-16, 2 females 16-26, 2 females 26-45, and 1 female 45+ (probably his
mother). One of the females 26-45 was
proably Marcus’s wife Betsey, but it is not known who the other female 26-45
might be, or the 2 females 16-26. He
was in the 1830 census for Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, page 94, with 1 male
30-40, 1 male under 5, 1 male 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 female 5-10, 1 female
10-15, 2 females 15-20, and 1 female 30-40.
The 1840 census for Taunton, MA, showed 1 male 40-50 (Marcus), 2 males
under 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20, 1 male 20-30, 2 females
5-10, 1 female 15-20, 2 females 20-30, and 1 female 40-50. The unknown sons and daughters listed below
are based on the 1830 and 1840 census records.
Some of those born earlier may have married and moved out of the
household. Some of them may have died
early, especially if they were twins.

1811[3]. She was born about 1790-1800.
Samuel was in the 1830 census for
Taunton, Bristol Co., MA, page 93, with 1 male 30-40 (himself), 1 female 30-40

The 1840 census for Taunton, MA was for Parney Graves and showed no
males, 1 female 5-10, 2 females 15-20, 1 female 30-40, and 2 females 40-50.
The 1850 census for Taunton, MA,
page 203, dwelling 932, listed Parney (or Packey) Graves, 58, male (probably an
error), in the household of Barton White, with no Graves families living
nearby. The 1860 census for Taunton,
MA, page 272, dwelling 1733, listed P. Graves, 71, female, living with Harriet
Bradell, 38.

GENERATION 3
CHILDREN OF MARCUS GRAVES (2)
AND BETSEY WITHERELL
George L. Graves (10) was born
about 1827 in MA, and probably died by 1870, since he wasn’t in the 1870
census. He married Sarah A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1827 in MA. They were in the 1850 census for Taunton,
Bristol Co., MA, page 241. He was a
metal smith. Eddie was in the household
of George A. Graves in 1880, listed as his brother. All their children were born in MA. If there were other children in addition to those listed below,
perhaps they died young, since no other children were listed in census records.
They were in the 1860 census for
Wallingford, New Haven Co., CT, page 405, with children George A., Herbert F.,
and Lewis E. The 1870 census for
