DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM C. GRAVES AND EMELINE ------ OF HANCOCK CO., MAINE

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

William C. Graves (1) was born about 1832 in Maine, and probably died before 1870.  He married Emeline ‑‑‑‑‑‑, probably about 1851.  She was born about 1833 in Maine.  They were in the 1860 census for Franklin, Hancock Co., ME.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in ME.  She and her children were in the 1870 census for Franklin, Hancock Co., ME, when she was a housekeeper for Nelson Millett, but William wasnÕt there.  She was in the 1880 census for Franklin, Hancock Co., ME, as the wife of Nelson Millett, and living with them was grandson Thomas N. Graves, age 5.  All the children were born in Maine, probably all in Franklin, Hancock Co.

    5.  Roscoe Graves, b.c. 1859.  Not with family in 1870 census.

 

 

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM C. GRAVES (1) AND EMELINE ------

Jane H. Graves (2) was born in Sept. 1852 in ME.  It is not known whether she married.  She was living with her mother in the 1900 census for Franklin, Hancock Co., ME, listed as single, 1 child still living, and Leigh R. Graves, grandson of her mother was living with her, so it is reasonable to assume he was JaneÕs son.  She was living with her mother in the 1870 census for Franklin, Hancock Co., ME.  She has not been found in the 1880 census, but (assuming she married) she might be the Jane Walton in Franklin in 1880.  That Jane Walton couldnÕt be found in 1900.  Jane Graves, single, was still living with her mother in the 1910 census for Franklin, ME, and Leigh R. Graves was married and living in Eden, ME.

Charles Graves (3) was born in Nov. 1854 in ME, and died by 1930.  He first married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  He married second Lydia V. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1891.  She was born in July 1866 in ME.  They were in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses for Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME.  He was a mason and a contractor.

    8.  Harvard B. Graves, b.c. 1903 (ME), m. Claire C. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1930.  Living with his widowed mother in 1930.

 

Benjamin Graves (4) was born in July 1857 in ME.  He married Hattie L. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1881.  Her surname may have been Bragdon, since the name of the unmarried aunt living with them in 1900 was Sarah J. Bragdon.  (However, in the 1910 census, when she was still living with them, she was listed as cousin, and no Hattie Bragdon of the right age has been found in census records.)  She was born in Sept. 1862 in ME.  He was in the 1880 census for Eden, Hancock Co., ME, working as a common laborer.  They were in the 1900-1930 censuses for Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME.  He was a mason and stonework contractor.  Both their children were born in ME.

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF JANE H. GRAVES (2)

Leigh R. Graves (6) was born in Feb. 1884 in ME.  He married Jennie E. (or F.) Staples, daughter of Charles H. Staples and Sarah  J. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born in Dec. 1887 in ME, according to the 1900 census.  They were in the 1910 census for Eden, Hancock Co., ME.  Living with them at that time were Louie R. Frese (probably actually Louise R. Graves), 2, and German Robins, 26, although those names arenÕt certain because the census was almost unreadable.  They were in the 1920 census for Franklin, Hancock Co., ME, with his father-in-law Charles H. Staples, 70, widowed, wood chopper, living with them.

JennieÕs parents were in the 1910 census for Eden, Hancock Co., ME, and Jennie was living with her mother (with her father away from home) in the 1900 census for Eden, ME.  All the children of Leigh and Jennie were born in ME.  He was a brick mason.  (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF CHARLES GRAVES (3)

Thomas N. Graves (7) was born in Jan. 1875 in ME, and died by 1920.  He married Alice T. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1897.  She was born in Jan. 1878 in ME.  He was living with his widowed grandmother, Emeline Millett, in 1900.  In 1910, Thomas and Alice were in the census for Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME.  She was in the 1920 census for Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME, as a widow.  All their children were born in ME.

    14.   Chandler E. Graves, b. Dec. 1897, m. Sarita E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1920.  In the 1930 census for Bar Harbor, Hancock Co., ME.  He was a grocery agent.

    15.   Althea Bernice Graves, b. Feb. 1899.

    16.   Malcolm W. Graves, b. Feb. 1900.

    17.   Alice V. Graves, b.c. 1903.

    18.   Arnold R. Graves, b.c. 1905.

+19.   Lauris N. Graves, b.c. 1907, m. Bessie L. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1926.

+20.   Percy Raleigh Graves, b. 1909, m. Gladys E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1929.

CHILDREN OF BENJAMIN GRAVES (4) AND HATTIE L. ------

Rae (or Ray) D. Graves (10) was born in Jan. 1886 in ME.  He married Winifred D. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1917.  She was born about 1896 in ME.  They were in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME.  He was a contractor and a mason.  Both their children were born in ME.

GENERATION 4

 

CHILDREN OF LEIGH R. GRAVES (6) AND JENNIE E. STAPLES

Martin Graves (13) was born 4 Feb. 1912 in ME.  He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  They may have lived in Boothbay Harbor, Lincoln Co., ME.  (R‑1)

    24.   Bruce Lee Graves, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑.

 

CHILDREN OF THOMAS N. GRAVES (7) AND ALICE T. ------

Lauris N. Graves (19) was born about 1907 in ME.  He married Bessie L. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1926.  She was born about 1909 in ME.  This was apparently her second marriage, since the 1930 census for Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME, showed 3 Schurman step-children living with them, all born in MA.  He was manager of a grocery store.  All their children were born in ME.

    26.   John H. Graves, b.c. 1930.

 

Percy Raleigh Graves (20) was born in 1909 in ME.  He married Gladys E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1929.  She was born about 1910 in PA.  His name was given as Rawley in the 1910 census and as Rawleigh P. in the 1930 census.  They were in the 1930 census for Northeast Harbor village, Mt. Desert, Hancock Co., ME, when he was a laborer doing road work.
