Rev. 13 Oct. 2014, Gen. 492

William Graves (1) was born about 1724 and died about 1790, both in Virginia.  He may have lived in Berkeley Co., VA, for at least part of his life.  He probably also lived in what became Bath Co., VA, perhaps then Augusta Co., VA, since his daughter Mary was supposedly born there.  He married ‑‑‑‑‑‑.

Berkeley Co. was created from the northern third of Frederick Co., VA in 1772, and later became part of West Virginia when that state was formed.  It seems possible that William Graves could have been descended from genealogy 169 or genealogy 116 (since Berkeley Co. was created in 1772 from Frederick Co., VA).  There was a Mary Graves in genealogy 116 of about the right age to be the one who married Jeptha Putnam, but she had a different father and a different husband.  No possible match has been found with genealogy 169.  (R‑2)

Children - Graves

  2.  Mary Graves, b. 1 June 1766, m. Jeptha John Putnam, d. 15 July 1855.

Mary (“Polly”) Graves (1) was born about 1765 in what became Bath Co., VA[1], and died 15 July 1855 in Alleghany Co., VA.  She married Jeptha John Putnam about 1784[2] in Berkeley Co., VA (now WV).  He was born 8 July 1760 (or 24 Sept. 1762) in Sutton Twp., Worcester Co., MA, and died 14 April 1837 in Bath Co., VA.  It is possible that John was his nickname rather than his middle name.  All their children were born in Bath Co., VA.

The 1850 census for Bath Co., VA shows Mary, age 85, living with her daughter, Martha, in the household of Thomas and Mary Ross.  Mary Ross was probably her granddaughter.

Source R‑1 gives the first 3 children listed below, and then Martha and Nancy (born about 1814).  There is a Nancy Putnam (b.c. 1813) listed in the 1850 census in the household of Fuller Putnam who could have been either a daughter of Fuller or of Jeptha.  Source R‑2 also lists the first 3 children below, but then gives Eunice, Sally, and Nancy born Oct. 1805.  (R‑1, R‑2)

[1] Her date and county of birth are according to the 1850 census. All counties of birth were listed on this page of the census. She was more likely born in Augusta Co., VA, since Bath Co. wasn’t created until 1790.

[2] Their marriage date has been given as 6 Sept. 1790.  If that is correct, then their first child isn’t likely to have been born in 1785.
