DESCENDANTS OF JOHN GRAVE AND NANCY PEAT OF CUMBRIA, ENGLAND

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

John Grave (1) was born about 1765, was baptized 20 Aug. 1765 in Bridekirk, Cumberland, and died 13 Aug. 1832 at Outerside mill, Aspatria, Cumberland, England.  His fatherÕs name may have been John Graves.  He married Nancy Peat, daughter of Jonathan Peat and Mary Potter, on 6 Feb. 1795 in Holme Cultram, Cumberland.  She was born about 1775 in Holme Cultram, and died 31 May 1846 in Outerside mill, Aspatria.  All their children were born in Torpenhow, although William might have been born in Whitrigg.  (R‑2)

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVE (1) AND NANCY PEAT

William Grave (3) was born about 1805 in Torpenhow (or Whitrigg), Cumberland, and died 28 Nov. 1863 in Gilcrux, Cumberland.  He first married Mary Little, probably about 1822.  She was born about 1802 (or 1805) in Abbey, Cumberland (probably the same as Holme Cultram), and died 17 Oct. 1853.  He married second Mary Davidson, daughter of John Davidson and Margaret Brown, on 4 March 1854.  She was born 8 Aug. 1815 in Harrington, Cumberland, and died 1 Sept. 1880[1].  He was listed as a corn miller in the 1841 and 1851 censuses for Gilcrux, Cumberland, and as a farmer in the 1861 census for Gilcrux.  They lived at Ellen Hall, Gilcrux.  In 1841, Nancy Grave, 60, was living with them, and was probably his mother.  (R‑1)

John Grave (8) was born about 1827 in Aspatria or Oughterside, Cumberland.  He married Margaret Ogden.  She was born about 1831 in Plumbland, Cumberland.  They were in the 1861 census for Royal Oak Inn, Gilcrux, Cumberland, and he was a farmer.

Ruth Grave (9) was born about 1829 in Oughterside or Aspatria, Cumberland, and died in 1897.  She first married James Davidson in 1848.  He was born about 1822 or 1824 in Gilcrux, Cumberland, and died in 1862.  Ruth was married and living with her parents in the 1851 census for Gilcrux, and James was apparently living elsewhere.  They were in the 1861 census for Aspatria, when he was an inn keeper.  She was a widow in the 1871 census for Gilcrux.  All their children were born in Gilcrux.

She married second William Keenan in Jan. 1872 in Cockermouth, Cumberland.  He was born about 1840 in Co. Down, Ireland.

William Grave (12) was born about 1835 in Oughterside, Cumberland, and died in 1891.  He married Jane Davidson in 1854.  She was born about 1827 in Gilcrux, Cumberland, and died in 1893.  (R‑2)

Peat Grave (14) was born in April 1838 and died 29 Sept. 1911, both in Ellen Hall Mill, Oughterside, Aspatria (or in Gilcrux), Cumberland.  He first married Jane Scott on 5 June 1858 in Gilcrux.  She was born about 1840 in Scotland.  They were in the 1861 and 1871 censuses for Gilcrux, Cumberland.

He married second Jane Holliday, daughter of Elizabeth Holliday, on 28 Feb. 1880 in Gilcrux, Cumberland.  She was born about 1839 in Dearham, Cumberland, and died 21 May 1910 in Cumberland.  The 1871 census for Dearham showed Elizabeth Holliday, char woman and widow, with 2 widowed daughters (Jane and Sarah, both coal bank sorters), and 3 children (at least the first 2 believed to be JaneÕs): James Holliday, b. 1866, and Margaret Holliday, b. 1868, and John Holliday, b. 1870.  Elizabeth and children Jane and Sarah were also in the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Dearham.  The 1841 census for Dearham listed Elizabeth Holliday, 35, agricultural labourer, Jane Holliday, 2, and William Holliday, 15, potter.  Peat and Jane Grave were in the 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses for Gilcrux, Cumberland.

Peat was a coal miner.  He was listed as Peter in the 1861 census, but as Peat in all other censuses.  All his children were born in Gilcrux.  (R‑2)

Jonathan Grave (15) was born about 1841 in Gilcrux, Cumberland, and died in 1928 in Trimdon colliery, Co. Durham.  He married Bridget Kelly about 1861.  She was born about 1842 in Branthwaite, Cumberland.  They were in the 1901 and 1911 censuses for Wingate, Durham, both showing his wife as Ann, born about 1842.  The 1901 census showed her born in Maryport, Cambridgeshire, and 1911 census said Branthwaite, Cumberland.  (R‑2)

Joseph Grave (16) was born about 1857 in Gilcrux, Cumberland, and died 18 July 1928[2].  He married Deborah ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1855 or 1857 in Flimby, Cumberland, and died 15 Aug. 1939[3].  They were both buried in Gilcrux Churchyard, Cumbria.  They were in the 1881 and 1891 censuses for Gilcrux, Cumberland.  They were in the 1901 census for Tallentire, Cumberland, and the 1911 census for Gilcrux.  He was a corn miller in 1881, a labourer in a colliery in 1891, and a farmer in 1901 and 1911.  Both their children were born in Gilcrux.  (R‑1)

William Grave (19) was born about 1859 in Gilcrux, Cumberland.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑.  She was born about 1868 in Caldbeck, Cumberland.  They were in the 1901 census for Aspatria and Brayton, Cumberland.  He was a coal miner.  All their children were born in Aspatria.

James Grave (36) was born about 1865 in Gilcrux, Cumberland.  He married Rosehannah (or Rose Anna) Williams.  She was born about 1868 in Aspatria, Cumberland.  They were in the 1911 census for Heworth, Gateshead, Durham.  All their children were born in Felling, Durham.  He was a coal miner hewer in 1911.
