DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM GRAVES AND ELIZABETH DONNELSON OF NY & LENAWEE CO., MI

GENERATION 1

William Graves (1) was born 25 March 1807 in Schoharie Co., NY, and died 19 March 1867 in Cambridge, Lenawee Co., MI.. He married Elizabeth Donnelson, daughter of John Donnelson and Millie ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born 16 May 1807 in Schoharie Co., NY, and died 18 Sept. 1887 in Ypsilanti, Washtenaw Co., MI. They were buried in Brookside Cem., Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI. They were in the 1850 census for Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI, and in the 1860 census for Franklin, Lenawee Co., MI. He was a farmer. Their first 7 children were born in NY and the last 3 in MI, which indicates they may have gone to MI about 1845. Elizabeth Graves, widow, was living with the family of her daughter Sarah in the 1880 census for Niles, Berrien Co., MI.

In the 1850 census for Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI, Joel Graves, 76 (b.c. 1774), farmer, born in MA, was living with them. It is likely that Joel was William’s father, and very possible that this is the Joel Graves of genealogy 214, some of whose descendants also lived in Lenawee Co., MI. They were in the 1860 census for Franklin, Lenawee Co., MI, with daughter Hannah (probably a widw) and her 2 daughters living with them.

It also appears that this family was descended from John Graves of Concord, MA (genealogy 166), based on the Y-DNA test results of a descendant of Joel Graves of genealogy 214. A less likely ancestral possibility is descent from Rear Adm. Thomas Graves of Charlestown, MA (genealogy 28); the Y-DNA signature is the same as for gen. 166, but they were less likely to have followed this migratory path.

The family must have moved from NY to MI about 1841. Based on census records, all the children through Charles were born in NY, and the last two were born in MI. (R‑2)

7. Charles Graves, b.c. 1840, m. Josephine ‑‑‑‑‑‑. They were in the 1880 census for Franklin, Lenawee Co., MI. She was b.c. 1844 in MI.

8. Luan (or Sarah) Graves, b.c. 1843. The 1850 census listed her name as Sarah and the 1860 census listed it as Luan. Luan (or some similar spelling) is probably correct since it seems unlikely there would be two children named Sarah.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM GRAVES (1) AND ELIZABETH DONNELSON

Hannah Graves (2) was born in April 1828, and died after 1900. She married William D. Sterling before the 1850 census. He probably died 1853-1859, since she and her two children were living with her parents in the 1860 census for Franklin, Lenawee Co., MI. She was widowed and living with the family of her sister Sarah in 1880. She was living with the daughter of her sister Sarah in 1900, when the census stated she had 2 children, both living.

Sarah S. Graves (3) was born about 1831 (or April 1829 according to 1900 census) in NY, and died 28 June 1927 in Hennepin Co., MN[1]. She married James Parker Howlett about 1860 (probably before the 1860 census, since she wasn’t with her parents in that ccensus). He was born about 1832 in NY, and died in 1897. They were buried in Brookside Cem., Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI. This family was recorded on the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Niles, Berrien Co., MI. In 1880, Sarah’s widowed mother and widowed sister Hannah were living with them. He was an insurance agent in 1880. Sarah was widowed and living with her daughter in 1900. All their children were born in MI. (R‑2)

Arnold T. Graves (4) was born about 1832 (or 19 Feb. 1834) in Schoharie Co., NY, and died 8 June 1899 in Cambridge, Lenawee Co., MI. He married Jane Richmond, daughter of Otis W. Richmond and Harriet VanBrunt, on 21 Oct. 1861 in Manchester, Washtenaw Co., MI. She was born 29 June 1840 in Manchester, MI, and died 11 July 1896 in Cambridge, MI. They were buried in Brookside Cem., Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI. They were in the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Cambridge, Lenawee Co., MI; their children were born in MI. He was a farmer. (R‑1)

Mark Douglas Howlett (12) was born in May 1860 in MN, and died 16 Jul 1929 in Los Angeles Co., CA[2]. He married Margaret A. Morgan on 2 Sept. 1891 in Salt Lake, UT[3]. She was born in Dec. 1867 in ID, and died in 1926. They were buried in Hollywood Forever Cem., Hollywood, Los Angeles Co., CA. This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Eureka, Juab Co., UT; their sons were born in UT. They were recorded separately on the 1910 and 1920 censuses, but both lived in Los Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA and stated they were married. (R‑2)

18. Thomas Jones Howlett, b. 4 June 1892 (Salt Lake City, Salt Lake Co., UT), m. Leila Nickerson, c. 1913, d. 20 Nov. 1950. She was b. 17 May 1893 (CA), d. 6 Sept. 1958 (Los Angeles Co., CA). Both bur. Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Glendale, Los Angeles Co., CA). Two children.

19. Mark D. Howlett, Jr., b. 6 Sept. 1893, m(1) Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑, c. 1923, m(2) Leonore Marie Keith, d. 7 Jan. 1976 (Los Angeles Co., CA). She was b. 9 Sept. 1892 (CO), d. 13 Jan. 1994 (Santa Clara Co., CA).

Cora Bell Howlett (13) was born in Aug. 1865 in MI, and died after 1920[4]. She married Roland Graeme Brown about 1892. He was born in June 1865 in NY, died 21 Dec 1919 in Hennepin Co., MN[5], and was buried in Brookside Cem., Tecumseh, Lenawee Co., MI. They were in the 1900 census for Minneapolis, Hennepin Co., MN, when Cora’s widowed mother and widowed aunt Hannah were living with them. They were in the 1910 census for Minneapolis, MN. He was an assistant general freight agent for the railroad in 1900, and a general freight agent in 1910. Widowed Cora was also recorded on the 1920 census in Minneapolis; their children were born in MN. (R‑2)

CHILDREN OF ARNOLD GRAVES (4) AND JANE RICHMOND

Charles C. (“Charley”)[6] Graves (16) was born 15 May 1868 in Millville, Ingham Co., MI, died 19 April 1961 in Pateros, Okanogan Co., WA, and was buried in Sullivan Cem., Winthrop, Okanogan Co., WA. He married Clara Alice Burgett, daughter of Ira Alvinza Burgett and Cynthia Patterson, on 11 Jan. 1899 in Yakima, WA[7]. Clara was born 31 May 1881 in Red Bluff, Tehama Co., CA, died 20 July 1938 in Grants Pass, Josephine Co., OR, and was buried in Grants Pass. All their children were born in WA, the first 2 in Winthrop and the third in Davenport, Lincoln Co.

There is no known social security number for Charles. It is doubtful he had one. He was self employed most of his life and ran an illegal moonshine still for years, so filing anything with the government was probably the last thing he wanted to do. (R‑1, R‑2)

William C. Graves (17) was born 20 July 1875 in Lenawee Co., MI, and died after 1940. He married Louella Sarah Billmeyer, daughter of A. Bellmeyer, on 20 Feb. 1902 in Cambridge, Lenawee Co., MI. She was born about 1875 in MI in MI, and also died after 1940. This family was recorded on the 1910-1940 censuses in Cambridge, MI; their children were born in MI. (R‑2)

Daisy Anna Graves (22) was born 21 July 1900 in Winthrop, Okanogan Co., WA, and died in June 1977 in Wenatchee, Chelan Co., WA. She married Frank Leedy Pennington. He was born 22 Aug. 1895 in KY, and died in Sept. 1964. They were buried in Sullivan Cem., Winthrop, WA. This family was recorded on the 1920 census and 1930 censuses in Winthrop, WA; their daughers were born in WA. (R‑2)

Charles David (“Josh”) Graves (23) was born 26 July 1902 and died 11 Feb. 1961, both in Winthrop, Okanogan Co., WA. He married Emma Marie Yockey, daughter of William B. Yockey and Emma Clara Pries, on 15 Oct. 1925 in Okanogan Co., WA. She was born 27 Feb. 1907 in Dyer Hill, Douglas Co., WA, and died 20 July 1999 in Omak, Okanogan Co., WA; their children were born in WA. She first married Herman Joseph (“Bud”) Kroum, son of Joseph Kroum and Emma Adelherd (Adelaid) Reinhold, on 18 May 1922. He was born 3 Dec. 1903 in Covington, Campbell Co., KY, and died 2 Feb. 1979 in Grandview, Yakima Co., WA. This family was recorded on the 1930 census in East Broadwayk, Yakima Co., WA. (These are the grandparents of Russell Kroum.) She married second William Shadrick Vails. He was born 10 April 1903 in OK, and died 17 Nov. 1968 in Yakima, Yakima Co., WA. He married Ruth Mulnix, daughter of Glenn Mulnix and Ruth Klinger, on 17 April 1938 in Clark Lake, Jefferson Co., MI. She was born 4 March 1917 in MI, and died 11 Aug. 1987.
