Robert Graves (2) was baptized 22
Feb. 1796 in Burwell with Walmsgate, Lincolnshire, England. He married Hester (or Esther) Prestley in
1825 in Louth, Lincolnshire. All their
children were baptized in Louth, Lincolnshire.
They were in the 1850 census for Louth, Lincolnshire, with Robert as
head of household, but Hester not listed, and children Michael, Jane Ann,
Betsey, Henrietta, Alice, and Esther L.
Robert apparently had a commercial coal and lumber business, and son
Michael helped him. (R‑3)

Thomas Henry Graves (3) was born 28
March 1829 in Louth, Lincolnshire, England.
He married Mary Wright, daughter of John Wright and Frances ‑‑‑‑‑‑,
on 1 Sept. 1850 in Harnston, England.
She was born 13 Dec. 1830 in Asterby, Lincolnshire, England. They emigrated to America in 1850, and lived
near Burlington, IA, on an island.
Thomas is said to have drowned while crossing the Mississippi River
neaer Burlington, IA. Another story is
that he was killed by Indians (trying to get food to eat) on the way to
Burlington. Mary is said to have been
rescued by Samuel Stephenson. After
Thomas died, she married second Samuel Stephenson on 5 July 1858 in Jefferson
Co., IA. She had 9 children by Samuel,
all born in IA.
Thomas and Mary were not in the
1850 census. The 1860 census for
Lockridge, Jefferson Co., IA, page 112, listed Samuel Stephenson, 32, farmer,
b. England, Mary, 30, her 3 Graves children, Emma, 9, Thomas, 5, and John, 3,
and son Richard Stephenson, 1. The 1870
census for Lockridge, Jefferson Co., IA, page 134, listed the family as
Stephens, listing Thomas and John with the Stephens name also. The 1880 census for Lockridge, Jefferson
Co., IA, listed the family as Stephenson, but Thomas and John could not be
found anywhere, neither with the Graves surname nor any variation of the
Stephenson name.
Emma was born in IL (according to
the 1860 census), and the other two children were born in IA. (R‑1, R‑2)

Michael Graves (4) was born about
1830 in Louth, Lincolnshire. He married
Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1828 in Fullerby, Lincolnshire. The 1861 census for Louth Park, Lincolnshire
listed Robert, 9, Michael, 5, and Frances W., 1, all born in Louth Park, but
the parents were absent, so other adults were staying with the children. The 1871 census for Louth Park, Lincolnshire
listed all family members. Michael was
a merchant. Exact birth and baptismal
dates are from the IGI.
