DESCENDANTS OF JAMES EVERETT GRAVES AND MARY SHUFFLEBARGER OF TN & IL

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

James Everett Graves (1) was born about 1824 in TN[1], and died after 1870.  He married Mary Shufflebarger on 4 Sept. 1847 in Pope Co., IL.  She was born about 1830 in IL, and also died after 1870.  They were in the 1850 and 1870 censuses for Pope Co., IL, and in the 1860 census for Little Black, Randolph Co., AR.  Some of the Shufflebarger relatives were in the census records as Barger and some as S Barger.  James must have died 1871-1880, and perhaps Mary did also, since all their children were either adopted by relatives (the two youngest, adopted by Abram and Elizabeth Shufflebarger) or living with relatives or on their own.  James was a farmer.  All their children were born in IL.

There is almost certainly a close connection between James Graves, Sarah Ann Graves of gen. 451, and Elizabeth Graves of gen. 456.  (R‑1)

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF JAMES E. GRAVES (1) AND MARY SHUFFLEBARGER

William R. Graves (4) was born about 1856[2] in Pope Co., IL, and died 28 Dec. 1938 in Harrisburg, Saline Co., IL.  He married Mary Ellen (ÒMollieÓ) Thomas, daughter of James Thomas and Mary Borum, on 8 Sept. 1878 in Saline Co., IL.  She was born 21 Jan. 1856 in Jackson Co., IL.  They were in the 1900 and 1910 censuses for Carrier Mills Twp., Saline Co., IL.  All their children were born in IL.  (R‑1)

Simon Graves (6) was born about 1868 in IL, died 11 Nov. 1928 in Independence, Saline Co., IL, and was buried in Palestine Cem., Carrier Mills, Saline Co., IL.  He married Mary Ann Delilia (ÒMinnieÓ) Wade, daughter of William Malcolm Wade and Eliza Ann Elizabeth Cooper, about 1890.  She was born 12 Nov. 1867 in Big Sandy, Benton Co., TN, and died 2 Oct. 1956 in Saline Co., IL.  They were in the 1910 census for Dist. 9, Benton Co., TN, when 5 of her 7 children were still living.  He was a laborer.  They were also recorded on the 1920 census in Carrier Mills, IL; their children were born in TN.

James Hiram Graves[5] (7) was born 9 March 1875 in IL, and died 12 March 1954 in St. Louis, MO[6].  He married Lucy Josephine Moreland, daughter of James A. Moreland and Isobel Stanley, on 13 May 1900 in Henson, Mississippi Co., MO.  She was born 7 July 1881 in Shawneetown, Gallatin Co., IL, and died 7 Nov. 1960 in Lilbourn, New Madrid Co., MO[7].  They were buried in Memorial Park Cem., Malden, Dunklin Co., MO.  This family was recorded on the 1900 census in Ohio, Mississippi Co., MO, the 1910 census in St. James, Mississippi Co., MO, the 1920 census in Lorance, Bollinger Co., MO, and the 1930 and 1940 censuses in Como, New Madrid Co., MO; their children were born in MO.  (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF WILLIAM R. GRAVES (4) AND MARY THOMAS

Anna M. (ÒAnnieÓ) Graves (9) was born 26 April 1880 (or 1881) in Saline Co., IL, and died 3 Sept. 1959 in Harrisburg, Saline Co., IL.  She married Isaac Uriah Reynolds, son of Johnathan M. Reynolds and Sarah Elizabeth Owen, on 29 Dec. 1900.  He was born 15 Oct. 1875 in Pope Co., IL, and died 28 Nov. 1945 in Saline Co., IL.  They were in the 1910 census for Polk Twp., Pope Co., IL, and in the 1920 and 1930 censuses for Independence Twp., Saline Co., IL.  In 1930, AnnaÕs father, W. R. Graves, was living with them.  He was a farmer.  All their children were born in IL.  (R‑1)

Verda Asalee Graves (15) was born 26 July 1890 in Benton Co., TN, and died 29 June 1951 in Carrier Mills, Harrisburg, Saline Co., IL.  She first married Otis (ÒOceÓ or ÒOcieÓ) Lowman Graves (#11).  He was born 27 Aug. 1885 (or 7 or 27 Aug. 1886) in Saline Co., IL, and died 16 (or 17) Oct. 1919 in Muddy Power Palnt, Harrisburg, Saline Co., IL.  She married second Joseph Stone, son of William Marion Stone and Elmina Shufflebarger.  He was born in Dec. 1881 in IL, and died in 1956 in Carrier Mills, Saline Co., IL.  All her children were born in Saline Co., IL  (R‑1, R‑2)

[1] The 1850 census gave his age as 23 (b.c. 1827), the 1860 census gave 36 (b.c. 1824), and the 1870 census gave 50 (b.c. 1820).

[2] His date of birth was given as 8 Dec. 1850 by R‑1, but the census records show that he was born about 1856.  He was 4 in the 1860 census and 14 in the 1870 census.

[3] Illinois, Deaths and Stillbirths Index, 1916-1947 listed his birth date as 7 Aug. 1866;  his World War I Draft Registration Card filed in Saline Co., IL showed the 27 Aug. 1885 date.  Family trees on Ancestry.com show 27 Aug. 1886 as his birth date.
