DESCENDANTS OF THOMAS GREAVES AND SARAH CLARKE OF BUCKINGHAMSHIRE AND NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Thomas Greaves (1) was born 30 June 1790 in Hillesden, Buckinghamshire, England, and died in Dec. 1837 in Buckinghamshire. Although he married Mary White on 26 Sept. 1807 in Buckinghamshire, he is believed to have had an illegitimate son by Sarah Clarke about 1812.

This Thomas Greaves is the one shown as a son of James Greaves and Rebecca Flowers in genealogy 47 (on the Graves Family Association website at www.gravesfa.org/gen047.htm). The reason this genealogy has not been added to the other is that there is not yet enough proof that this lineage is correct. (R‑1)

Sarah Clarake was born about 1776 in Hartwell, Buckinghamshire, and died in June 1845 or 1852 in Buckinghamshire. (R‑1)

CHILDREN OF THOMAS GREAVES (1) AND SARAH CLARKE

James Greaves (2) was born about 1812 or 1814 in Hartwell, Northamptonshire, and died in Dec. 1855 in Buckinghamshire. He married Susanna Herbert on 29 Oct. 1832 in Hartwell. (Some people have given her surname as Clark.) She was born about 1807 in Hanslope, and died in March 1876, both in Buckinghamshire. They were in the 1851 census for Hanslope, Buckinghamshire, with their last 4 children, with James listed as general dealer and Susanna as lacemaker. All their children were born in Hartwell, Northamptonshire except the last one born in Hanslope, Buckinghamshire. (R‑1)

Thomas Greaves (5) was born about 1837 (or July 1838) in Hartwell, Northamptonshire (although later censuses gave his place of birth as Hanslope, Bucks.), and died in July 1909 in Buckinghamshire. He married Mary Lane, daughter of George Lane and Frances Grant, in 1863 in Buckinghamshire. She was born about 1843 or 1844 in Hanslope, Buckinghamshire, and died in Jan. 1902 in Buckinghamshire. They were in the 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 censuses for Hanslope. Thomas was a bricklayer, and was listed as a mason in later censuses. All their children were born in Hanslope. (R‑3)

James Greaves (9) was born 25 May 1863 in Hanslope Buckinghamshire. He married Sarah E. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ about 1890. She was born about 1862 in North Crawley, Buckinghamshire. They were in the 1901 census for Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire, when he was a coal merchant. They were in the 1911 census for Newport Pagnell, when he was a worker in the coal trade. All their children were born in Newport Pagnell.

William T. Greaves (10) was born 21 Dec. 1864 in Hanslope, Buckinghamshire, and died in Sept. 1936 in Northampton, Northamptonshire. He married Kate Amelia Lane, daughter of James Lane and Caroline Maddocks (?), about 1899. She was born about 1864 (or Dec. 1861) and died in Sept. 1943, both in Northampton, Northamptonshire. William was in the 1891 census for St. Andrew, Northamptonshire, single. They were in the 1901 census for St. Giles, Northamptonshire. They were in the 1911 census for Northampton, Northamptonshire. He was a boiler stoker at a brewery. Because the 1911 census states that William and Kate had been married 12 years and that 3 of their 3 children were still living, it seems likely that daughter Alice was by a previous marriage of William. He married Frances Gregory, daughter of Job Gregory and Mary Hakes (according to R‑3) or Mary Tebutt (according to R‑6), in Oct. 1904 in Northamptonshire. She was born 24 Feb. 1882 in Hanslope, and died in Sept. 1957 in North Buckingham, both in Buckinghamshire. All their children were born in Hanslope, Buckinghamshire. (R‑3, R‑6)

She married Sidney Hanson Roach Richdale, son of John Hanson Richdale and Lucy Roach, in Jan. 1901 in Derbyshire. He married Nellie Towers, daughter of William Frederick Towers and Kate Hanley, on 6 April 1929 in Northampton. She was born 2 June 1904 and died in Sept. 1968, both in Northampton, Northamptonshire.
