Graves (1) married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑. They apparently lived in TN, since at
least Larkin was born there. By
1828, Elizabeth had died and a guardian was appointed in Union Co., IL for her
children, Elbert, Larken [sic], Lucinda and Edward. Her husband was apparently also dead by then, since a Samuel
M. Phillips was appointed guardian of all the children. Some sources say that Elizabeth was a
Phillips and Samuel M. Phillips was possibly her brother. (R‑1)

Co., MO[1]. She was buried in Scott City, MO. Their children were baptized in St.
VincentÕs Catholic Church.
He married second Mary Barnes on 3
Sept. 1848 in Scott Co., MO[2]. There is also a marriage for an Edward
Graves to Mrs. Mary Whitaker recorded in Alexander Co., IL on 1 Aug. 1850. His widow, Mary Graves, filed as
administratrix in Alexander Co., IL on 1 Aug. 1851. It is not clear which Mary Graves was his widow. He lived in Cape Girardeau Co.,

Graves (22) was born 22 Nov. 1837 in Thebes, Alexander Co., IL, and died 30
July 1910 in Villa Ridge, Pulaski Co., IL. He married Mary Catherine Littlejohn, daughter of Daniel
Littlejohn and Cynthia A. Thompson, on 20 Oct. 1864 at Old America, Pulaski
Co., IL. She was born 22 May 1839
in Mason Co., KY and died 25 April 1920 in Villa Ridge, IL.
A biographical article states:
"S. H. Graves, county coroner, Mounds, Ill., was born Nov. 22, 1837, in
Alexander Co., Ill., son of Edward Graves, a native of Tenn., who died July
6th, 1851, of the Asiatic cholera. He was a farmer by occupation.
The mother of our subject was
Elizabeth (Mirron) Graves, a native of Pennsylvania. She died in Scott Co., Missouri. She was the mother of four children of whom two, the oldest
and youngest, are now living, viz., Samuel H., our subject, and his sister
Amanda M. Devouch.
Samuel H. is mainly
self-educated. In early life he
followed farming. He enlisted
August 22, 1861, in the Thirty-first Illinois Regiment, Volunteers, Company F,
and was promoted to Orderly Sergeant.
He served three years under the stars and stripes, and was then
honorably discharged in East Point, Ga., having participated in the battles of
Belmont, Mo., Fort Donelson, battle and siege of Vicksburg, and others. He was wounded at the battle of Fort
Donelson by a minnie ball shattering his right hand. He draws a pension now.
After the war, he returned to Pulaski
County and was joined in matrimony, October 20, 1864, at old America, to Miss
Mary C. Littlejohn, born May 22, 1839 in Mason County, Ky., daughter of Daniel
and Cynthia A. (Thompson) Littlejohn.
Mrs. Graves is the mother of six children now living....
After marriage, Mr. Graves engaged
in the lumber business for two years, when he turned his attention to
farming. He has filled school
