DESCENDANTS OF JOSEPH GRAVES AND ANN GURNEY OF TOWCESTER, NORTHAMPTONSHIRE, ENGLAND

GENERATION 1

Joseph Graves (1) was born about 1756, died 16 Feb. 1837 in Towcester, and was buried 20 Feb. 1837 in Towcester, Northamptonshire, England. He married Ann Gurney on 30 March 1794 in Wicken. She was born about 1769, and was buried 20 May 1824 in Towcester.

His will in the Northants Record Office states:

GREAVES, Joseph Wheelwright 7 Mar 1837. To dau Ann Harris, 3 several messuages, cottages or tenements with appurtenances in Towcester in the occupations of Samuel Benbow, Rachel Young and Samuel Allington, and in mortgage to Lucy Elizabeth Sheppard of Towcester, widow for £200 + interest. Ann Harris to discharge 1/3 part of the Mortgage Debt.

To dau Martha Leonard, 3 other Messuages, Cottages or Tenements in Towcester in occupation of James Cross, John Walmsley and Samuel Tear, also included in said Mortgage to Lucy Elizabeth Sheppard. Martha Leonard to discharge 1/3 part of Debt.

To dau Elizabeth Sharpe, 2 Messuages, Cottages or Tenements with yards, gardens, Barns, outbuildings and appurtenances in Towcester in occupation of the said Elizabeth Sharpe, and Myself and Benjamin Holloway, also included in the said Mortgage to Lucy Elizabeth Sheppard. Elizabeth Sharpe to discharge 1/3 part of Debt.

Elizabeth Sharpe to also pay a legacy of £19 19s each to my Grandchildren Louisa Greaves, Eliza Greaves and George Greaves (children of my late son John Greaves dec) when they reach 21.

All that my Messuage, Cottage or Tenement with appurtenances in Towcester, now in occupation of James Oakley and his Undertenants, unto said dau Elizabeth Sharpe for life. After her death, to go to Eliza Ann Cooke Greaves, the natural dau of my said dau Elizabeth Sharpe.

To Elizabeth Sharpe, a life estate and interest in All that Close or inclosed Ground with Appurtenances in Tiffield now or late in my own occupation. Elizabeth Sharpe the residuary legatee of any more property.

To son Joseph Greaves and daus Ann Harris and Martha Leonard £30 apiece

To dau Elizabeth Sharpe all Household Goods and Furniture, Plate, Linen and China, Monies etc, personal effects

Joseph Graves (2) was buried 15 July 1854 in Towcester, Northamptonshire. He married Susanna Smith on 1 Jan. 1824 in Whilton, Northamptonshire. She was born about 1800 in Welton, Northants. She was in the 1861 census for Towcester, widowed, age 60, with unmarried children Frances, 24, and William, 20, and grandchildren George Greaves, 6, and Maryann Greaves, 11.. (R‑1)

16. William Graves, b.c. 1841, m. Emma Lovell, 26 Dec. 1865 (Towcester). She was b.c. 1835 in Towcester, and d. before 1891, dau. of John Lovell and Mary Hefford. They were in the 1881 census for Towcester with no children, when he was a licensed victualler and ran the White Hart Inn on Park St. In 1891, he was widowed and still an inn keeper at the same address. His surname was listed as Greaves in 1851 and 1861, and as Graves in 1881 and 1891.

John Graves (4) was buried 24 March 1834 in Towcester. He married Jane Moulton, daughter of John Moulton and Ann Johnson, on 25 June 1823 in Towcester. She was born about 1798, and was buried 22 Feb. 1834 in Towcester. (R‑1)

He died 27 Jan. 1834 and was buried 29 Jan. 1834, both in Towcester. She married second Thomas Eyles on 24 June 1837 in Towcester. He was born about 1806 in Eydon. (R‑1)

Ann Harris (25) was born about 1824 in Duston, Northamptonshire, England, and died in 1892 in Northampton. She married Charles Phipps, son of Thomas Phipps and Sophia Tarry. He was born about 1823 in Duston, and died in 1876 in Northampton. (R‑2)

Catherine Phipps (34) was born 7 Aug. 1852 in Dallington, and died 24 Feb. 1917, both in Northampton, England. She married John Pryor, son of Joseph Pryor and Elizabeth Reynolds. He was born 3 Aug. 1849 in Swavesey, Cambridgeshire, and died 27 Jan. 1934 in Northampton. (R‑2)

Joseph Charles Pryor (35) was born 22 July 1872 in Duston, and died 9 March 1957, both in Northampton, England. He married Ada Jones Margretts, daughter of Samuel Jones Margretts and Elizabeth Brown, on 6 June 1897 in St. Michael and All Angels, Northampton. She was born 13 April 1876 and died 19 April 1961, both in Northampton, England. All their children were born in Northampton. (R‑2)
