DESCENDANTS
OF PARENTS OF DAVID WILLIAM GRAVES AND MARY ANNE GULLEDGE, SARAH JANE GRAVES
& WILLIAM A. PURVIS AND THOMAS GRAVES & MARY E. GAINEY OF ANSON CO., NC
& CHESTERFIELD CO., SC
GENERATION
1
‑‑‑‑‑‑
Graves (1) apparently died before 1830, since he was not listed with his wife
in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses.
He married Mary ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was born about 1795, and died after
the census was taken in 1860, but before 1870.
The 1830 census for
Chesterfield Co., SC (p. 347, Chesterfield Dist.) lists Mary Graves as head of
household.
The 1840 census for
Chesterfield Co., SC (film 022508, p. 347, Chesterfield Dist.) lists Mary
Graves, age 30-40, as head of household.
In the household are 2 sons and 2 daughters. One son (Thomas) is 5-10 years of age, the other son (David
W.) is 10-15, one daughter (Sarah Jane) is 5-10, the other
daughter (unknown) is 15-20.
The 1850 census for Chesterfield
Co., SC (film 0444814, dwelling/family 110/110, p. 106, Chesterfield Dist.)
lists the following family: Mary Graves, age 55, David W. Graves, age 32, Sarah J. Graves, age 16, Thomas
Graves, age 14.
It is likely that
this Sarah J. Graves was Sarah Jane Graves who married William A. Purvis. In addition, it seems very likely that
the husband of Mary Graves was a grandson of Robert Graves of Anson Co., NC and
Chesterfield Co., SC (see book of that same name by Kenneth Vance Graves,
1980), descended from genealogy 270.
(A check of the Graves families in Chesterfield Co., SC and Anson Co.,
NC in 1830 and 1840 might be able to find the name of MaryÕs husband. Then a thorough search of wills, deeds,
and other documents in these counties might provide the additional information
needed for a connection.) (R‑1)

GENERATION

CHILDREN OF
------ GRAVES (1) AND MARY ------
David William Graves (3) was born
22 Jan. 1812 in NC (or about 1818 in SC), and died 21 Nov. 1898 in
Chesterfield, Chesterfield Co., SC.
Both the 1850 and 1860
censuses for Chesterfield Co., SC indicate David was b.c. 1818, although the 1840
census indicates 1825-30.
He married Mary Anne Gulledge,
daughter of Daniel Gulledge and Jane Henderson, about 1872. She was born 15 May 1842, and died 25
April 1921 in Chesterfield, both in Chesterfield Co., SC. They were both buried in Chesterfield,
Chesterfield Co., SC. They were in
the 1880 census for Cole Hill Twp., Chesterfield Co., SC, with her mother
living with them. She was living
in Cole Hill as a widow in the 1900, 1910, and 1920 censuses. David was a farmer. All their children were born in SC.
It has been
suggested that this David William Graves is
the one in genealogy 14, who was born 19 March 1828, died 9 Aug. 1878 in
Owensboro, KY, and married Mary Ann Dillman on 14 Nov. 1850. That suggestion is obviously wrong,
since the David W. Graves, born 1828, is in the 1860 census for Hammond,
Spencer Co., IN, and the 1870 census for Paradise, Muhlenberg Co., KY, with
David born in IN or KY. It appears
that he is also in the 1850 census in Indiana, living with his parents, Boston
and Barbara Graves, probably descended from genealogy 105. The David W. Graves of this genealogy
was born earlier and was in both the 1850 and 1860 censuses for Chesterfield
Co., SC, living with his mother, apparently unmarried with no children.

(4) was born about 1833 in Anson Co., NC.
She married William A. Purvis.
He was born about 1823 in Anson Co., NC[2]. He was still living 23 Sept. 1899 when
he signed a deed to land located in Morven, Anson
Co., NC. However, in 1900 he was
no longer listed in the census.
The 1860 census
shows WilliamÕs occupation as shoemaker, age 34, birthplace NC[3]. The 1870 census lists him as 46[4]. In the 1880 census he is listed as
farmer, age 53[5]. (R‑1)

Co., SC (film 805217, dwelling 1082, family 1080, p. 171, Chesterfield Dist.),
Thomas is listed as age 25, born SC, occupation farmer, with wife, and daughter
10 months of age.

("Clara" or "Clary") Graves (12) was born 23 Oct. 1859 and
died 1 Aug. 1933[10]. She lived all her life in Cheraw,
Chesterfield Co., SC. She married
Christopher Wesley Teal, son of Benjamin Teal and Eliza (or Elizabeth) Davis,
on 25 Nov. 1878. He was born
1854-1857, probably 1855[11]. All their children were born in
Chesterfield Co., SC.[12]
It is remembered by
the descendants that Clarinda may have been an orphan who was raised in her
teen years by a Lasiter woman, who was the widow of a
Civil War soldier, buried in Lynchburg or Gettysburg. They also said that the Lasiter
woman lived to be over 100. The
1870 census (Cheraw, Chesterfield Co., SC, dwelling 164, family 170) lists Mrs.
M. Lasiter as age 57, head of household and as
housekeeper, another Graves woman (H. Graves) in the household, and the two
girls Clara Graves (age 11) and Nancy Jane Graves (age 9) (the census gives
only their initials). (R‑2)
