Rev. 22 Sept. 2011, Gen. 569
DESCENDANTS OF WALTER GRAVES AND ELLA VENSON OF CASWELL CO., NC
GENERATION 1
Walter Graves (1) may have been
born about 1860 in Caswell Co., NC.
He married Ella Venson. The death certificate of their son,
James H. Graves, gives the names of both his parents, although the last name of
his mother is difficult to read, and no one named Venson
has been found in Caswell Co. census records, and Ella has not been located in
any other census records.
Walter was apparently Barzillai Walter Graves, born about 1852 in Caswell Co.,
NC, son of James L. Graves and Frances A. (McNeil) Kerr, of genealogy 270. Granddaughter Louise Lee said that he
was white and lived in Yanceyville, Caswell Co., NC; and the names of the
parents on the death certificate of James H. Graves match the names of Barzillai and Ella in the 1880 census for Danville,
VA. It is interesting that Ella is
listed as white in that census, and there are no children in the household.
It was previously thought that
Walter might be the one born about 1855 who was a son of Margaret Graves in
genealogy 79. However he was
mulatto, and family details donŐt fit.
Another possibility was Walter Graves, born about 1864, son of Orange
Graves and Sarah ‑‑‑‑‑‑ of genealogy
22. He was listed as black, and it
isnŐt known whether he married or had children. However, neither of these other possibilities matches the
records or the recollections of the descendants. (R‑1)

GENERATION 2
CHILDREN OF WALTER GRAVES (1) AND ELLA VENSON
James Haywood Graves (1) was born 20 Oct. 1882, died 26 March 1947 in Yanceyville, and was buried in Graves Chapel Baptist Church Cem., all in Caswell Co., NC. He married Pearlie May Phillips, daughter of James Phillips and Bethel ‑‑‑‑‑‑, about 1907. She was born in March 1890 in NC. She was in the 1900 census for Yanceyville Twp., Caswell Co., NC, living with her parents. Hayward and Pearlie were in the 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses for Yanceyville Twp., Caswell Co., NC. His death certificate gave much information about him, including the names of his parents. The informant was Ilah M. Graves.
It appears that James was probably the one in the 1900 census for Pelham Twp., Caswell Co., NC, listed as born March 1882, step-son, in the household of Tobias and Sarah Hatchett. If so, then he may have had a sister, Lula, born Dec. 1878, who was listed as a step-daughter in the same household, and had children. If that was really the same James Graves, however, then his mother would have been Sarah, unless (as often happened with extended families and inexact census records) Sarah was just a relative and not really their mother.
All their children were born in Caswell Co., NC. (R‑1)
