DESCENDANTS OF JACOB GRAVES AND MARTHA BENTLEY OF ENGLAND & NJ

GENERATION 1

Jacob Graves (1) may have been born about 1630-1640 (or about 1665), possibly in England. He was a captain in the British Navy. He married Martha Bentley in 1659 in Middleburg, Zeeland, Holland.

There is apparently much misinformation for this family, especially for the Cox family. It is believed that there may be some connection to one of the land frauds (maybe even the Mercer Land Fraud) where families got together to pay an outrageous fee to a genealogist who could help them “prove” that their forefathers owned an important (and always valuable) piece of property. The correctness of the early generations of this family is not known, and proof is needed. (R‑1, R‑2)

She married Philip Cox, son of Phillip Cox and Dorcas Hull, on 24 Sept. 1698 in NJ. He was born 17 Jan 1677 in Bridgewater, Somerset Co., NJ, and died in Sept. 1785 in Blue Hills, Somerset Co., NJ.
