Rev. John Graves (6) was born about
1761 in Threlkeld, Cumbria, and died 2 Aug. 1832 in Yarm, Yorkshire. He married Mary Bedford Rayner in 1785 in
Stockton on Tees. He was a schoolmaster
at both Stockton and Yarm Grammar Schools.
He was also vicar of Kirklevington and curate at Worsall. In 1808 he wrote The History of Cleveland,
a well-known reference book for historians in that area. They lived in Cumberland, North Yorkshire
and Cleveland, England. They and their
children who died young were all buried at St. Johns Church, Worsall, near

CHILDREN OF JOHN GRAVES (6) AND

Rev. Henry Graves (13) was born
about 1803 in Yarm, Yorkshire, and died 13 Jan. 1865 at age 61. He married Mary Clifford Rudd in 1833. She was born about 1806 in Yarm (or Marton),
Yorkshire, and died 8 July 1874. They
were both buried at St. Mary’s, Yarm.
He was rector at Middleton St. George for 27 years and incumbent of High
Worsall for 22 years. (Both parishes
are near Yarm.) They lived in Cleveland
and North Yorkshire.
They were in the 1841 and 1851
censuses for Yarm, Yorkshire. The 1861
census for Yarm listed Henry with his sons Henry and Edward, but not Mary or
the other children. The 1871 census for
Barton upon Irwell, Lancashire, listed Mary, 65, widowed, living with her
unmarried son John and her grandson Henry Clifford Graves. All the children of Henry and Mary were born
in Yarm, Yorks. (R‑1, R‑2)

Henry Bartholomew Graves (14) was
born about 1833 in Yarm, Yorkshire, and died in 1875 in Watchet, Somerset. He married Sarah Hall on 13 April 1862. She was born about 1836 in Lynd,
Somerset. They were in the 1871 census
for Bedminster, Redcliff, Bristol, Somerset, England. She was in the 1881
census for Bristol, St. Peter, Gloucestershire, as a widow. Henry Clifford Graves was not in the
household in the 1871 census and Mary C. Graves was not in the 1881
census. All their children were born in
Bristol. (R‑2)

21. Henry Clifford Graves, b.c. 1863, m. Sarah A. ‑‑‑‑‑‑. She was b.c. 1871 in Bristol. They were in the 1891 census for St. James
and St. Paul, Bristol, Gloucestershire, with no children, and he was listed as
a commission agent. They have not been
found in the 1901 census.

Thomas Rayner Graves (18) was born
in 1842. He married Sophia Smith Green
about 1862. She was born in Bristol,
Gloucestershire, England. They lived in
Cleveland, North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire and Lancashire. She was in the 1871 census for St. James and
St. Paul, Bristol, Gloucestershire, listed as Sophia Graves, draper’s
assistant, with her 2 sons. She was in
the 1881 census for Walton on Hill, Lancashire, at 2 Grange St., listed as
Sophia S. Green, with her 2 Graves children, but also with children Ernest
Green, 2, and Annie G. Green, 6, both born in Manchester, Lancashire. In both censuses she was listed as married
but no husband was in the household. It
appears that she first married Thomas Graves and married second a Mr. Green, so
her maiden name was probably not Green.

She married Henry Arthur Leworthy in 1886 at Bedminster, Bristol. He was born about 1865 in Bristol. They were in the 1891 census for Bedminster,
Bristol, he was a post office sorting clerk, and his father, John Leworthy, 71,
was living with them. They were in the
1901 census for Keynsham, Somerset, with him listed as an ink colour
grinder. All their children were born

He married Ada Clark in 1891.
She was born about 1870 in Manchester, Lancashire. They lived in Lancashire and West
Yorkshire. They were in the 1891 census
for Stretford, Lancs., at 32 Clifford St., with John listed as a bookkeeper,
and his brother Ernest living with them.
They were in the 1901 census for Chorlton cum Hardy, Stretford, Lancs.,
at 3 Cartwright Rd., with John listed as a mercantile clerk. Their first 3 children were born in
Stretford, and the next 2 in Chorlton cum Hardy, both in Lancashire. (R‑1)

Arthur Rayner (or Raynor) Graves
(27) was born about 1866 in Leeds, Yorkshire.
He married Janet Dobie about 1885 in England. She was born about 1868 in England, and both her parents were
born in Scotland. According to the 1920
U.S. census for Bronx, NY, Arthur immigrated to the U.S. in 1889, became a
citizen in 1901, and he was a painter. The family has not been found in the 1910 U.S. census. They were in the 1900 census for Bronx, New
York City, NY, with 4 children in their household, and 4 of her 6 children were
still living. According to the 1900
census, they both immigrated to the U.S. in 1886 and had lived there 14
years. The first child was born in
England and the other 3 in Bronx, New York City, NY.. (R‑1, R‑3)
