GENERATION 1

James Grave (1) was born about 1816 in England.  He married Elizabeth ‑‑‑‑‑‑, perhaps about 1833.  She was born about 1816 in England.  They were in the 1841 census for Egham, Surrey, England, with his occupation as cow keeper.  Neither James nor Elizabeth were born in Surrey, but everyone else in the household was.  Living with them in 1841 was Elizabeth Graves, 50, possibly his mother, Sarah Gill, 60, and Catharine Gill, 5.  None of the family could be found in the 1851 census.

GENERATION 2

CHILDREN OF JAMES GRAVE (1) AND ELIZABETH ------

John Grave (3) was born about 1837 in Egham, Surrey.  He married Sarah Gates, daughter of James Gates, on 14 April 1859 in St. Nicholas Church, Brighton, Sussex.  She was born about 1831 in Ninfield, Sussex.  According to their marriage certificate, John was living in the parish and Sarah was living at the Richmond Hotel at the time of their marriae; John was 25 and Sarah was 27; the witnesses were Benjamin and Maria Gates; and John’s father was James Graves, a farmer, and Sarah’s father was James Gates, also a farmer.  They were in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses for Hove, Brighton, Sussex, with all their children born in Hove.  He was a chimney sweep, and apparently also a tobacconist in 1871.  It appears that Sarah had a child before they were married, since the 1861 census listed Frederick Gates, 5, son-in-law (probably meaning stepson), born Bexhill, Sussex, living with them.  In the later census records, Frederick’s name was listed as Frederick Grave.
