GENERATION 1

Luther Henry Graves (1) was born 17 Oct. 1811 in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA, and died 22 Dec. 1862 in Canfield, Mahoning Co., OH. He was an itinerant tailor, and moved around in northwestern Massachusetts and nearby areas (Williamstown, Northampton, and Pittsfield, plus Rutland, VT and Kinderhook, NY). He first married Nancy Bliss on 5 Aug. 1835 in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA. She was born 29 March 1814 in Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., MA, and died 25 April 1845 in MA. He married second Lucy Maria Bridges on 20 April 1846 in Pittsfield. She was born 5 July 1825 and died 16 Nov. 1865, both in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA. (R‑1)

Caroline Allen Graves (3) was born 1 Oct. 1838 in Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA, and died 16 June 1929 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY. She married Abner Kingman. He was born 5 Feb. 1814 in Providence, RI. (R‑1)

Edward Henry Graves (8) was born 30 April 1850 in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA, and died 16 Sept. 1919 in Canfield, Mahoning Co., OH. He married Carrie S. Comstock in 1898. She was born 26 Oct. 1853 in MA, and died 23 Oct. 1920 in Canfield, OH. They were in the 1900 census for Canfield, Mahoning Co., OH, with his sister Anna living with them.

R‑2 found an 1880 census for Streator, LaSalle Co., IL, that listed an Edward and Carrie Graves with the same years of birth, and a son Lewis C. Graves, born 4 Oct. 1879 in IL, and died 15 Sept. 1917 in Oak Park, Cook Co., IL. However, places of birth aren’t exactly the same, and this couldn’t be the same Edward if he didn’t marry until 1898. As conclusive proof that the Edward and Carrie of the 1880 census were not the ones of this family, they were in the 1900 census for Streator LaSalle Co., IL. (R‑1, R‑2)

14. Ina M. Graves, b. Oct. 1883, m. Edward A. Fisk, d. 1935. She was an adopted daughter, according to the 1900 census, apparently by a previous marriage of Carrie.

Charles Louis Graves (9) was born 27 (or 28) Feb. 1852 in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA, and died 30 Dec. 1919 in Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH. He married Isadore Eliza Robbins, daughter of Thomas Durant Robbins and Mary Little, on 3 June 1874 in Lanesborough, Berkshire Co., MA. She was born in Oct. 1856 in MA, and died in 1944. (R‑1, R‑2)

Francis (“Frank”) Theodore Graves (10) was born 23 July 1854 in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA, and died 14 March 1907 in Ransom, Nobles Co., MN. He married Carolyn (“Carrie”) Louise Dow on 7 April 1881 in Ransom, MN. All their children were born in Ransom, Nobles Co., MN. (R‑1)

Frederick Arthur Graves (11) was born 23 July 1856 in Williamstown, Berkshire Co., MA, and died 2 Jan. 1927 in Zion, Lake Co., IL. He married Lavina I. Peck, daughter of Henry H. Peck and Ophelia P. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, in 1899. She was born about 1868 in NY. (R‑2)

23. Arthur Henry Graves, b. 19 June 1902 (IL), m. Ethlyn T. ‑‑‑‑‑‑, d. 25 Dec. 1973 (Lakeland, Polk Co., FL). She was b.c. 1906 in KS. They were in the 1930 census for Springfield, Greene Co., MO. They were in the 1940 census for Norfolk, VA. They apparently had no children.

24. Carl Francis Graves, b. 12 April 1904 (MN), m. Bertha Ursula Frey, 16 May 1928 (MN), d. 8 Sept. 1976 (Lansing, Ingham Co., MI). She was b. 26 April 1902 in Leonard, Cass Co., ND, and d. 29 April 1984 in Lansing, MI. They were in the 1930 census for Ottawa, Franklin Co., KS. Couldn’t find them in 1940 census. Probably no children. They were in city directory for Lansing, MI in 1959. He was a church pastor.

Robert Kingman (13) was born 18 June 1876 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA. He married Charlotte Gordon Maury in 1895. She was born in Oct. 1870 in NY. (R‑1)

Arthur Frederick Graves (21), called Frank or AF, was born 1 April 1893 in Ransom, Nobles Co., MN, and died 18 Jan. 1952 in Vicksburg, Warren Co., MS. He married Mabel Flora Nicklas, daughter of Jacob Benjamin Nicklas and Sarah (“Sadie”) Ellen Strock, on 9 Oct. 1917 in Worthington, Nobles Co., MN. She was born 14 March 1887 in Chambersburg, Franklin Co., PA, and died 22 Nov. 1981 in Tallulah, Madison Parish, LA. Both their children were born in Tallulah, Madison Parish, LA. (R‑1)

28. Robert Nicklas Graves, b. 28 Feb. 1922, m. Grace Ashmore, d. 14 Feb. 1979 (Tallulah, Madison Parish, LA). He was a Captain in the U.S. Army in WW II, and was buried in Silver Cross Cem., Tallulah, LA[1]. She was born in 1924 and died in 2008.

GENERATION 4

CHILDREN OF ROBERT KINGMAN (13) AND CHARLOTTE G. MAURY

Gordon Maury Kingman (25) was born 17 Oct. 1896 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY[2], and died in Jan. 1973 in Garden City, Nassau Co., NY. He married Frances Nash Wingate on 20 Sept. 1915 in Berryville, Clarke Co., VA. She was born about 1887 in KY, and died in 1985. They were in the 1920 census for Falls Church, Fairfax Co., VA. She was in the 1930 census for Falls Church, VA, married, with her 3 children. She was in the 1940 census for Washington, DC, divorced, with her 3 children. Gordon couldn’t be found in the 1930 or 1940 censuses. His U.S. World War II draft registration card gave his residence as Queens Co., NY in 1942. All their children were born in DC. (R‑1)

Charles William Graves (26) was born 1 July 1904 in Youngstown, Mahoning Co., OH, and died in Sept. 1952 in Worthington, Franklin Co., OH. He married Hannah Jacquellyn McCloud, daughter of Percy Hugo McCloud and Dortha Francis King. She was born 10 April 1905 in Glouster, Athens Co., OH, and died 21 April 1992 in Omaha, Douglas Co., NE. They were in the 1930 census for Youngstown. OH. They were in the 1940 census for Columbus, Franklin Co., OH. (R‑2)

Frank Arthur Graves (27) was born 6 Dec. 1918 in Tallulah, Madison Parish, LA, died 14 (or 15) April 1995 in Lafayette, Lafayette Parish, LA, and was buried in Lafayette Memorial Park, Lafayette, LA. He first married Dorothy (“Dottie”) Ann Marie Vicknair, daughter of Emile Frank Vicknair and Elvira (“Vera”) Olympia Barrios, on 20 June 1943 in Gretna, Jefferson Parish, LA. She was born 5 Jan. 1917, and died in Oct. 1984 in Lafayette, LA. He married second Bessie Mae Landers.

His obituary posted on findagrave.com:

“Frank Arthur Graves, 76, died on Friday, April 14, 1995 at Lafayette General Medical Center Hospital.

Frank was a native of Tallulah, Louisiana, the son of the late Arthur Frederick Graves and Mabel Nicklas Graves.

He graduated from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a degree in Agriculture. Following graduation, he taught Agriculture in Bogalusa, Louisiana.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a Navigator with the U.S. Army Air Corp. While flying over Romania, his plane was shot down and he was captured and held as a Prisoner of War. As a result of his courageous and distinguished service, he was the recipient of the following medals: Purple Heart, Prisoner of War, American Campaign, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaigns, Victory WW II, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

A resident of Lafayette since, 1958, Frank was an Independent Insurance Salesman for 30 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Daybreak Sunday School Class.

Frank was survived by his wife, Bessie Mae Landers Graves, two daughters, two sons, and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother and his first wife, Dorothy Vicknair Graves.”
