DESCENDANTS OF JOHN WILLIAM GRAVES AND ELIZABETH DESHA OF BOURBON CO., KY

 

 

GENERATION 1

 

John William Graves (1) was born 27 Dec. 1793, and died 20 May 1850 in Lafayette Co., MO.  He married Elizabeth Desha on 3 May 1819 in Bourbon Co., KY.  She was born 1 May 1805 in Mason Co., KY.  At least the first 3 children listed below were born in Bourbon Co., KY.  (R‑1, R‑2)

+3.  David A. Graves, b. 5 Dec. 1822, m. Lavinia C. Letton, 1 April 1845, d. 30 Nov. 1858.

   5.  Polly Graves, b.c. 1827, d. before 1848.

 

 

GENERATION 2

 

CHILDREN OF JOHN W. GRAVES (1)

David A. Graves (3) was born 5 Dec. 1822 in Bourbon Co., KY[1], and died 30 Nov. 1858 in Lexington, Lafayette Co., MO[2].  He married Lavinia C. Letton on 1 April 1845.  She was born 21 Dec. 1829 in KY[3], and died 23 May 1908.  The family was listed in the 1850 census for 46th District, Lafayette Co., MO, twice, on page 213, house 992, and page 171, house 330, both taken in October 1850.  Perhaps the family moved that month.  All their children were born in Lafayette Co., MO.  David was a farmer.

After David died, Lavinia married Henry C. Chiles, perhaps about 1861.  He was born about 1828 in KY, and was a farmer.  They were listed in the 1870 census for Washington, Lafayette Co., MO, page 387, house 53, and in the 1880 census, same place, page 239A.  (R‑1, R‑2)

   7.  Elizabeth (“Bettie” or “Betty”) Graves, b.c. 1847, prob. d. before 1860 (not in 1860 census).

   8.  Mary D. Graves, b. April 1850.

   9.  David Graves, b.c. 1851.

+10.  Talliaferro D. Graves, b. 12 March 1855, m. Laura A. Murray, 30 Jan. 1888, d. 1 Nov. 1898.

   11.  Anna Belle Graves, b.c. 1858.  She was a music teacher.  Not in the 1860 census, but in the 1870 and 1880 censuses.

   12.  Laura Graves, b.c. 1859.  Was in the 1860 census but not in the 1870 or 1880 censuses.

 

 

GENERATION 3

 

CHILDREN OF DAVID A. GRAVES (3) AND LAVINIA C. LETTON

Talliaferro D. Graves (10) was born 12 March 1855 in Lafayette Co., MO, and died 1 Nov. 1898 in a horse and wagon accident.  He was living with his mother and stepfather in the 1870 and 1880 censuses in Washington, Lafayette Co., MO, and was listed as Oliver D. Graves in the 1870 census.  He married Laura A. Murray on 30 Jan. 1888 in Lafayette Co., MO.  She was born 21 March 1859.  All their children were born in MO.  Laura and the 4 living children were in the 1900 census for Washington Twp., Lafayette Co., MO, Mayview Village, page 22A.  She had 6 children, 4 of whom were living.  (R‑1, R‑2)

   15.  Anna Belle Graves, b. May 1890, m. ‑‑‑‑‑‑ Bobbitt, d. Charleston, WV.

+17.  Louise Chiles Graves, b. Jan. 1894, m. Wilbur Forman Brown, 1933, d. Aug. 1956.

   18.  Laura Talliaferro Graves, b. July 1897, m. Charles Colby Hewitt.  Lived in MA, and prob. died in FL.  He was b. 3 Nov. 1889 in Chicago, Cook Co., IL.

[2] David’s death date estimated from the fact that Lavinia was listed as a widow in 1860 and the youngest child in 1860 was 1 year old.

[3] The 1850 census for 46th District, Lafayette Co., MO showed her as 20, born in KY.  The 1860 census for Lexington, Lafayette Co., MO listed her as 33, born in MO.  The 1870 census listed 41, born in KY, and the 1880 census listed 52, born in KY.
